The Major
Degree Offered: B.A.
The Women's Studies undergraduate major offers students a rigorous but flexible program of study, examining women and gender in relation to race, class, nation, sexuality, colonialism, multiculturalism, and globalization. Students examine the ways in which women's experiences are gendered in diverse cultural, economic and class-based communities and the role that gender plays in specific cultural and historical contexts. Areas of inquiry include but are not limited to femininity and masculinity across cultures and historical periods; transnational feminisms; gender and culture; gender law and public policy, critical feminist, race and legal theory; women's participation in social and cultural production; the implication of feminist theory for philosophical and epistemological traditions; sexual identity politics and history; queer theory and lesbian cultural criticism. Drawing from approximately fifty courses, many of which are cross-listed with other academic units, students fulfill the requirements of the major and also have the opportunity to design an emphasis relevant to their special interests through the cognates.
Students will earn a minimum of 36 credit hours (see requirements). A number of courses may count in more than one cognate. At least 30 credits must be upper division courses. No course with a grade lower than C may be used to satisfy the major. Students will design their programs in consultation with the Women and Gender Studies academic advisor.
