Current Issue/Words/Eurydice

Leah Rubinsky - "Eurydice"

Color weaves through the dried brush

Evening crouches

You nestle

Against the dead crumbs of the earth

Eyeing me, edging toward me

Yet evading

Slit eyes indifferent

Scales soft to the touch I wonder

If we could strike a deal

I’m leaving him and all the ones before

Take my silky ankle, speckled red freckles

Ballooning from hooks you’ve caught a fish

He’ll follow me, you already know

He’ll spill out of the bars, heavy with memory

The most haunting narcotic

He’ll zigzag drunkenly down into the oily night

He’ll curse me

He’ll rage He’ll pine He’ll plead He’ll regret

He’ll wonder if he’s always known that he wanted me dead
