Current Issue/About the Artists

Marisa Beahm - Marisa’s life approach was borrowed from Harriet they Spy: never leave home without a notebook or a pen. Since she was little, she’s been writing incessantly and now has incriminating libraries detailing her entire life. Naturally, she entered into journalism, where she puts her love of words to work. She also participates in poetry-slams, open-mics and is co-chair of CU’s Poetry Club. When not writing, Marisa tries to keep up with family and friends, who are her biggest sources of inspiration.

Claire Cahir - After a considerable hiatus, Claire Cahir is a born again college student. She is working on a Creative Writing degree and a teaching certificate for Secondary Education at CU Boulder. She lives in Boulder with her husband and teenage daughter.

Sonja Chacon - Sonja is a Xicana studying anthropology. She used to do a lot of slam and spoken word and would like the reader to know that she is just working on shaping her voice.

Andee Coco - Andee is a junior majoring in Sociology. She is a part of the Sociology Club and is the Media Relations Coordinator of the Women's Resource Center.

Nikita Duncan - My name is Nikita Duncan, and I’m currently a junior at CU Boulder, majoring in Studio Art and Psychology. I have always loved painting, but it wasn’t until last year that I began taking art classes thanks to the encouragement and support of family and friends. When I make paintings, my goal is to simultaneously capture and liberate ideas on a canvas. “Orgasmic Energy” was originally an attempt at a self-portrait, but as I began painting I found myself using abstract and explosive brushstrokes to convey myself. I called it “Orgasmic Energy” because these pulsating and vibrating colors represent the energy that I wish to outwardly project.

Suny Gao - Suny is a junior majoring in Media Studies and Studio Arts. She is the Marketing Coordinator of the Women's Resource Center.

Sheila Maier - Sheila is a concurrent BS/MS student in the IPHY department of the University of Colorado. She started writing at an early age, and in high school, she co-founded a literary magazine, Idioms. Though her professional interest lies in medicine, she keeps up writing as a hobby and method of procrastination.

Nina Miller - I am a senior at the Univ of Colo. Fine Art major, Women's Studies minor, and enrolled in the TAM program in the Atlas building. Many of the women in my family are artists, however I am the first to actually major in Fine Art. This is due to support and encouragement from my family, a love of life and art, and the belief that the world becomes more enriched when diverse perspectives are shared and celebrated.

Beth Osnes - Beth Osnes, Ph.D., teaches theatre at the University of Colorado in Boulder. She was a Fulbright Scholar in Malaysia where she conducted research on the shadow puppet theatre. She is author of Acting: An International Encyclopedia (ABC-Clio) and Twice Alive: A Spiritual Guide to Mothering (Woven Word Press) as well as many articles on theatre, mothering and activism. She is co-founder of Mothers Acting Up, a movement to mobilize mothers to advocate for the world's children (mothersactingup.org) and is now touring North America with a one-woman show about mothering and activism.

Angela Palermo - A transplant to Colorado, Angela Palermo is a writer, performer and activist living in Denver. She has published poems in the LAWCHA Newsletter, Main Street Free Press, Slam This!, (CU Boulder’s slam poetry anthology) and Transgender Tapestry. She has performed at Lady Fest Out West in Denver and was the featured performer at Boston’s Gender Crash in October 2005. An out transsexual woman, Angela wrote “My Christmas Vagina” for a performance of the Vagina Monologues in February 2006. She is presently collaborating with her partner, Sandra Azcarate, on Mujeres del Sol, a self-published comic book set in a dystopic near future. The first issue should be available in summer/fall 2007 at www.mujeresdelsol.com. She also has a poem appearing in Focus on the Fabulous, an anthology of GLBT writers due to be published in September 2007. Angela is committed to ending all forms of sexual and domestic violence, volunteering with the Rape Assistance and Awareness Program and Colorado Anti-Violence Program.

Tito Torres - Tito was born in El Salvador and came to the US at three years of age; he was raised in East Palo Alto, California. He is twenty years old and a sophomore double majoring in Math and Women's Studies. His plans for the future are to become a high school math teacher and be involved somehow with anti-violence education.

Emily Woolf - Emily is graduating in May 2007 with an English Creative Writing degree, with an emphasis in Poetry. She's loved writing since she learned how to put letters together, and in turn words to form sentences. She's from Vermont and nothing makes her happier than New England in the fall.
