Spring 2008 Innovative Seed Grant Program Awards Announced

The Vice Chancellor for Research and Provost have announced the award winners for the Second Annual Innovative Seed Grant Program (IGP). The awards provide up to $50,000 for research, scholarship, and creative works to UC-Boulder faculty that:

  • involve new initiatives and take investigators in creative, and sometimes high-risk/reward directions; and
  • have tangible payoffs in terms of future funding, scholarly or artistic impact, and development of new collaborations.

Interdisciplinary proposals were strongly encouraged, and 22 awards were granted across 19 disciplines. For a complete list of award-winners, click here. The success rate for the arts and humanities proposals was particularly high, with 42.86% of the submitted proposals receiving awards. Next highest was the Social Sciences with a 23.40% success rate, and the Natural Sciences / Engineering at 22.22%.

The competition was keen this year with nearly 100 proposals, which, as Russell Moore, Associate Vice Chancellor for Research, said, “were even more rigorous and finely-tuned to the program specifications than the first year’s pool. The program is now well-established, and I expect the proposals and the resulting research will continue to be of exceptionally high caliber from here on out. The program is already a tremendous success.”

The proposals underwent a rigorous review as well by 62 faculty members across 10 panels, including award winners from the First Annual Innovative Seed Grant Program. For a complete list of this year’s reviewers, click here.

To celebrate the success of the program and to kick-off the third annual competition, a reception for the first two year’s award winners is scheduled for Friday, October 24th, 2008 from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Club Level of Folsom Stadium. The Third Annual Innovative Seed Grant Program will take place earlier in the school year than the first two years and has an expected deadline of Monday, December 1st, 2008. Details will be made available by October 24th.
