Peace Corps

The Peace Corps and CU-Boulder have maintained a strong relationship since the Peace Corps' inception 46 years ago. Fifteen CU-Boulder alumni were some of the first volunteers who served during the agency's inaugural year in 1961. Volunteers use their education, skills and work and volunteer experience to support grass-roots development projects in the areas of education, health and HIV/AIDS, business and IT development, environmnet and agriculture, and community and youth development. In addition to making a real difference in the lives of others, the benefits of service include paid travel to and from the country of service, living expenses, medical and dental care, forbearance of student loans, graduate school opportunities, extensive language, technical, cross-cultural and health and safety training and over $6,000 after completing service.

Non-profit organization with over 40 years experience in sending students to Latin America for summer public health projects. This summer, we will send 640 volunteers to 9 different countries working closely with local sponsoring agencies, such as the Peace Corps, Save the Children and Care.

During an AMIGOS summer, volunteers work with international grass-roots organizations in teams with 1-2 other volunteers in Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Brazil, Paraguay, or Uruguay .
Volunteers live in a particular community for 6-8 weeks with local host families and have an immense amount of creative flexibility with their projects, which they plan, implement, and evaluate all in Spanish or Portuguese.

Typical projects include the construction of fuel efficient stoves, community gardens, latrines, and water systems, teaching school children and families within schools and clinics the importance of hygiene, environment, and nutrition, and whatever other community-led development projects the town wishes to undertake. There is a trip fee so contact to find out more information.
