BuCC - Guidelines, Rules, and Tips

  1. Only prepackaged cans and food items may be used. Any sized can (big or small) can be used in the sculpture.
  2. Only 20 builders at any given time can work on your sculpture in the Balch Field House, but no maximum is set for the size of your team.
  3. The structure must be self-supporting
  4. Only cardboard or foam board (for leveling), rubber bands, and tape may be used, NO METAL.
  5. The cans/boxes cannot be harmed and their labels must remain intact and not be covered!!
  6. The structure must be built in an 8'x8'x8' area.
  7. On Friday, April 24, teams will have from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM to build their structures on spaces provided. Judging will be from 4:00-5:00 PM by CU judges and Balch will be closed at 5:00 PM. On Saturday, April 25, community viewing is before and during the Spring Football Game. A community vote will be taken at this time and winners will be announced during the Spring Football Game.
  8. All teams are required to take down their sculpture and get cans into provided boxes and walk them to the nearby Food Share truck. All food will be weighed at the Food Share Warehouse.
  9. The sculpture may not be anything you can walk under or through.
  10. Stanchions will be provided to keep the public away from your completed sculpture.

Tips on how to get started and participate:

  • Ask your friends, academic dept, classmates, or student group if they are interested in forming a group
  • Once your group is formed, decide on a general design for your sculpture. It can be a statement on the need for more awareness around hunger, the logo of your student group/department, or something fun you want to build.
  • Google for images of "canned sculptures." But don't be discouraged on making an elaborate design. But if you feel ambitious think about asking for help from someone in the engineering or architecture depts on campus, or an architect in the Boulder area.
  • After coming up with a group and/or a design, register online on this website: BuCC Registration

(First 3 Teams to Register gets a $50 gift card, compliments of Safeway, to get started)
