FERPA
When your child was in elementary and high school, the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) gave you and your child rights to access your child's educational records. Now that your child is in college, these same laws transfer ownership of the records directly to your son or daughter. The Office of the Registrar is responsible for administering the FERPA guidelines at the University of Colorado – Boulder.
If your child provides a written consent via the Student Permission Form or if you claim your child as a dependent on your most recent income tax forms, you may have access to some elements of your child's financial aid record.
If the Office of Financial Aid determines you are authorized, we can then release information in our file, except for the following:
- Grades, grade point average, academic standing
- Student tax forms
- Student employment records
- Professional Judgment documents related to the student’s unusual circumstances
- Billing details
- Satisfactory Academic Progress details
In the case of divorced/remarried parents, we sometimes are asked for information on file that is personal to the other parent. Although a student may have authorized multiple parents to have access to the financial aid record, we will not release information that belongs to the other parent. Our office is committed to serving our students and families efficiently while protecting the privacy of all parties involved.
