Summer Institute Participants 1998-2006

What is the Summer Institute?

Mission:

This institute provides a comfortable and fun environment in which faculty can explore various technologies that support both teaching and research. The focus this year is on collaborative and social networking software associated with Web 2.0 and their applications in teaching and learning. The tools and techniques we will explore will enhance learning, engage students more intensively and make courses more interactive without adding to faculty members time.

2008 Dates:

Session A will begin Monday, May 12 through Friday, May 16.
Session B will begin Monday, May 19 through Friday, May 23.

Location:

The 2008 FTEP Summer Institute:
The Institute will provide a fun and intellectually stimulating environment to learn about and try online social networking and collaboration tools. The use of these tools in support of student learning, both in and out of the classroom will be presented. Faculty from CU and Georgetown will present their experience with these tools and the related research. The participants will be using tools such as wikis and blogs throughout the Institute to capture their ideas, communicate with other participants and experience online interaction. In addition we will provide experience with various tools such as Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, Flickr, Surveymonkey, Second Life, Zotero etc. The goal of the first week is a survey of the tools, including basics of using the tools. This survey will be in a context of understanding the new opportunities they provide educationally, i.e. what you can do with them that you can’t do now. The second week will go into sufficient depth to enable faculty to develop a step by step design for implementing these tools and is focused on allowing the participants to develop a project that they can use in an upcoming course. The Institute will be held in the College of Engineering Integrated Teaching and Learning Laboratory (ITLL). Each Faculty participant will have the use of a dedicated computer in the spacious lab for the hands-on exercises and for work on their projects. Participants are also invited to use their own laptops.

Sessions:

The 2008 FTEP Summer Institute will consist of two separate sessions.

Session A, ‘Social Networks, Web 2.0, Modern Students – What’s a faculty member to do?’

Session B, ‘In depth focus on Web 2.0 tools supporting the modern learning environment’

Activities will be scheduled from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm in the College of Engineering Integrated Teaching and Learning Laboratory. Participants may register for either or both sessions. By submitting an application, you are committing to full attendance on all days of the Summer Institute sessions for which you are accepted.

Requirements:

We assume all participants are familiar at a basic level with email, web browsing, typical office suite applications, and comfortable on their computer with file management. You do not need to be a super user with any particular piece of software. Those interested in a survey and light experience with the tools should attend Session A. Those interested in moving beyond a brief introduction and developing a project for their class using the new capabilities should continue in Session B. The major requirement is an openness to exploring new ideas and opportunities in your teaching and in support of student learning.

SI Faculty:

• Mary Ann Shea, Co-Director, Faculty Teaching Excellence Program
• Professor Mike Lightner, Co-Director, Electrical & Computer Engineering
• Professor Randy Bass, Executive Director of the Center for New Designs in Learning and Scholarship (CNDLS), Georgetown University
• Professor Diane Sieber, Herbst Humanities
