SUEP PRE-PROF LEAD
Job Announcement 2009-10

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Pre-Prof Lead acts as a liaison between the Graduate Teacher Program (GTP) and Special Undergraduate Enrichment Programs (SUEP), and introduces undergraduate students to the idea of becoming a professor. Pre-Prof Leads create programming that supports and encourages undergraduate students to go to graduate school and to consider careers as college or university faculty members. The Pre-Prof Leads are hired and evaluated by the Directors of the GTP and SUEP and report directly to the GTP Lead Coordinators and the Pre-Prof faculty Mentor. Preferably, the Lead serves for two years, but must reapply the second year.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be available May 11-15, 2009, for a Seminar on Academic Management, Leadership and Consultation, and for meetings on August 14, 2009, December 2009, January 6, 2010, and April 2010;
  • Collaborate with the other Pre-Prof Lead(s) on all activities;
  • Meet with Lead Coordinators and the Pre-Prof faculty Mentor to plan and assess activities;
  • Jointly write a plan for the academic year, implement the plan, and assess it;
  • Communicate information about the GTP to SUEP students;
  • Offer at least two workshops (together with the other Pre-Prof Lead[s]) each semester;
  • Offer one workshop (individually) in his/her own discipline (year one) and do a disciplinary presentation (year two);
  • Participate with Lead Graduate Teachers in the planning and implementation of an interdisciplinary team workshop;
  • Attend the Best Should Teach Lecture at the Fall Intensive in August and receive the Best Should Teach Silver Award; and
  • Encourage SUEP students to pursue the Professional Development Certificate for Preparing Future Faculty (PDC:PFF) offered by the Graduate Teacher Program.

QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must:

  • Be a current or incoming Norlin Scholar;
  • Be interested in pursuing a Ph.D. for the purpose of university-level teaching;
  • Be available for the May 11-15, 2009 Seminar on Academic Management, Leadership and Consultation, and additional Lead meeting dates;
  • Have excellent working relationships with the Director of SUEP, peers, and faculty, or the willingness to develop and maintain them;
  • Have exceptional collaboration skills and be willing to develop those skills;
  • Have willingness to work with undergraduate and graduate students individually and in small groups; and
  • Have willingness to develop and present material and activities on teaching at the college level.

COMPENSATION

SUEP Pre-Prof Leads receive additional Norlin Scholarship funding (applied directly toward tuition), with the understanding that each student’s service as a Norlin Scholar constitutes the Lead work as explained in the job description above. The Leads may participate to the extent they are able in other Norlin/SUEP activities, and must take the appropriate number of Norlin classes as well.

APPLICATION PROCESS

  1. Meet with the director of Undergraduate Enrichment Programs, Joan Gabriele, to express your interest and demonstrate your qualifications to be recommended as a Pre-Prof Lead. 
  2. Access application materials through the GTP website (http://www.colorado.edu/gtp) or pick up an application packet in the Graduate Teacher Program office (201 ATLAS).
  3. Fill out your application packet and include*:
    1. Pre-Prof Lead application form with SUEP approval signature;
    2. Completed application questions;
    3. Letter explaining why you would like to be a SUEP Pre-Prof Lead and what you would like to accomplish;
    4. CV or résumé; and
    5. Photograph of yourself.
  4. Deliver your completed application packet (do not staple) to the GTP office in 201 ATLAS by February 13, 2009.
  5. Schedule two interviews, one with the GTP director and one with the Lead Coordinators.

*Returning Leads are required to submit the application form with SUEP approval signature, and a brief letter explaining what you learned during your first year as Lead and why you would like to continue in your role.
