CIRTLcasts & TIGERcasts
Fall 2009
Tuesdays, 2:00 – 3:00 PM
Learning Across the CIRTL Network

Please join us as we connect virtually with other campuses in the CIRTL Network to share ideas about teaching and learning in the STEM disciplines. We will be using Elluminate Software and Adobe Connect. CU Boulder students will join us in 200 ATLAS or E103 Norlin and be able to communicate with students and presenters from other campuses. This is your chance to join the cutting edge of teaching with technology. All workshops count toward GTP Certificates. OK to arrive early for technology set up.

October 20
200 ATLAS

The Science of Broadening Participation
Patricia Rankin, Associate Vice Chancellor for Faculty Diversity and Development and Professor of Physics at the University of Colorado at Boulder
Ever wonder why an intervention designed to get more women into science may not work as planned? Why the percentage of women who are physicists in Italy is higher than the percentage in Denmark? We are starting to realize the importance of understanding interventions and assessing their effectiveness in context so that we can develop more effective strategies to increase inclusion in the STEM fields. This CIRTLcast is intended to introduce some key ideas and stimulate discussion on these topics!

Writing a Socratic Portfolio in the STEM Disciplines
Laura L. B. Border, Director, Graduate Teacher Program, CU Boulder
A Socratic Portfolio process guides graduate students as they move through their graduate programs. This session provides a useful framework to follow as you develop your philosophy of teaching and learning.

What Does Bloom’s Taxonomy Have to do with the STEM Disciplines?
PJ Bennett, Interim Assistant Director, Graduate Teacher Program
Dr. Bennett has spent years applying Bloom’s Taxonomy to MCD Biology and has interviewed teachers from all disciplines to understand how Bloom’s might apply to testing in their disciplines. He shares his understanding of Bloom and demonstrates how to ask effective test questions using the Taxonomy.
December 1

Reflective Course Development Using CIRTL Materials
Lillian Tong, PhD, Faculty Associate, Center for Biology Education, UW-Madison
Dr. Tong describes the rationale, components, outcomes, and the opportunities for developing a STEM course that integrates the CIRTL pillars. Her examples will be based on experiences on such course development at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
December 8
