Course Objectives

The main focus of the course will be to explore some of the most intriguing aspects of Japanese syntax to non-native learners from the pedagogical perspective. 

 

Hopefully, by taking this course, the student will have a better understanding and awareness of how Japanese speakers construct their thoughts, express their feelings, and express their world view through the use of the language.

 

The course will have the following components:

  1. Typological characteristics of the Japanese language, an overview.
  2. Very brief overview of phonetics, phonology, and morphology of the Japanese language
  3. Japanese syntax as seen from the pedagogical perspective.
  4. Additional topics relating to the pedagogical grammar of Japanese
  5. Student presentations

Class Procedure:

 

Four main sources of materials* are used in the course. Read the assigned portion thoroughly and answer the questions on the worksheet where applicable. You are encouraged to read the material critically, and from the pedagogical point of view; always ask yourself how you may use the knowledge in teaching the grammar to students of Japanese as a foreign language.
