Larry Bell
Director, Office of International Education

Originally trained in Linguistics and ESL, Bell has degrees from Southern Illinois University (SIU) where he taught for two years. He also taught in and directed the Intensive English Program at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee for 12 years before moving into international education administration on that campus. All told, Bell’s higher education international experience combines for a total of over 30 years on four campuses.

Bell has served NAFSA: Association of International Education in a number of positions. Most recently he served as NAFSA’s Vice President for Policy and Practice (2005 – 07). In addition, he has served in elected positions in TESOL and other professional associations; and, has served or is currently serving on the boards of several foundations and educational organizations. He is currently a member of the Executive Committee of the Association of International Educational Administrators (AIEA). He also received a Fulbright for a program in Korea in 2000.

Bell developed his interest in international activities while serving as a draftee in the military in Viet Nam. After leaving the army, he studied Vietnamese language and linguistics (his BA is in Vietnamese Language from SIU, MA in Linguistics) and that started him on his international journey. That journey has taken him to more than forty different countries as a part of his higher education work.

Colonel Steve Dinauer, US Marines
Commanding Officer, Naval ROTC, CU Boulder
Professor of Naval Science, Department of Naval Science, CU Boulder

Colonel Dinauer joined the Naval ROTC unit in 2010. A career infantry officer, he's served in a variety of command and staff billets since receiving his commission in 1986. He's led infantry and light armored reconnaissance units from the platoon to battalion levels, to include command during two combat tours. In the supporting establishment, he oversaw the operations of the program that provides Marines to the Department of State for embassy security, served on the Joint Staff in support of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and on the staff within the Office of the Secretary of Defense.

Colonel Dinauer received his BS from the University of Wisconsin-Madison majoring in International Relations, and earned his MA in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College in Newport, RI.

Colonel Dinauer teaches NAVR 4020, "Leadership and Ethics," in the Spring semester.

Joan Gabriele
Director, Special Undergraduate Enrichment Programs

Joan Gabriele has been at the University of Colorado since 1987, as a graduate student, teacher, and program director. Along with other interests related to student development, Joan participates in mindful leadership training (also known as neuroleadership) and feels privileged to work with exceptional staff who value "mindfulness at work." She's been Director of Special Undergraduate Enrichment Programs since 2003, where she serves as the CU Boettcher Scholar mentor and Director of Norlin Scholars and Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program. She greatly enjoys providing support for the intellectual and personal growth of students, helping them achieve wholeness as emerging scholars and leaders, and simply having the opportunity to interact daily with CU's wonderful undergraduates.

Stephen Grace
Executive Director, President's Leadership Institute

Stephen Grace joined the President's Leadership Institute as Executive Director in January, 2010. An accomplished professional in nonprofit management, broadcast journalism and academia, Grace leads a professional team dedicated to PLI's signature program the Presidents Leadership Class, as well as developing new opportunities for PLI. His previous positions include: President of the Los Angeles Cable Television Access Corporation; Senior Producer for the NBC Today show; and as a member of the adjunct faculty at California State University, Los Angeles.

Carol Miyagishima
Director, Leadership Residential Academic Program at Williams Village (LRAP)

Carol Miyagishima is the director of the Leadership Studies Residential Academic Program at Williams Village. She has taught in the Ethnic Studies department and currently teaches Foundations of Leadership and Privilege and Oppression in US Contemporary Society. This is her 22nd year of teaching at the University of Colorado.

She received her BA from Metropolitan State College and her Masters of Social Science with a focus on Multicultural Leadership from the University of Colorado, Denver.

During her career, Ms. Miyagishima has devoted her time to working with organizations across the country to strengthen multicultural leadership development and community consensus building efforts. Her current interest is studying equine behavior and its application to mindfulness and human leadership development.

Rozelle

David Rozelle
Professor of Military Science, Army ROTC

MAJ David Rozelle is an Active Duty Armor Officer who was an ROTC Commissioned Officer from Davidson College, and has held every position in Armor from Tank Platoon Leader to Squadron Executive Officer. He is a proven combat leader who has deployed three times to combat as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom (I, III, and 09-10) and the transition to Operation New Dawn. Major David Rozelle, a below-knee amputee, is an icon, resource and inspirational figure for American service members injured in recent conflicts. While in Iraq in 2003, commanding K Troop of the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, David lost part of his right leg when a landmine exploded under his Humvee. David has since redeployed twice as an amputee and become the first amputee in recent history to redeploy as a commander of troops to the same battlefield as injury. David's education includes a BA from Davidson College, Davidson, North Carolina, and a MMS from the Marine Corps University, Quantico, Virginia.

Peter Simons
Director, Institute for Ethical and Civic Engagement (IECE)

Peter graduated from CU-Boulder with a Bachelors Degree in Psychology and a Masters Degree in Public Administration. He also received a Masters of Arts Degree in Liberal Studies and an Elementary Education Teacher Certification from Regis University. Prior to coming to work at CU-Boulder, Peter’s career was devoted to children, youth and family services including direct service, administration, planning, program and policy development and legislative work with local and state governments and in the private-non-profit sector. He also served as a mediator for the Colorado State Personnel Board. While at CU-Boulder, Peter directed the Office of Parent Relations and currently serves as the Director of the Institute for Ethical and Civic Engagement. In his spare time, Peter loves to hang out with his wife, Gayle, and their two dogs and enjoys hiking, bicycling, snowshoeing and art.

Colonel Keith E. Tobin
Commander, AFROTC Det 105, and Chair, Department of Aerospace Studies.

Colonel Tobin is responsible for the pre-commissioning training of approximately 250 undergraduate students and is administratively responsible for approximately 50 Graduate students and Airman Enlisted Commissioning Program students.

Colonel Tobin entered the Air Force in 1987 through the Reserve Officer Training Corps program at Rutgers University and earned his pilot wings at Columbus Air Force Base, Miss. Since then, he has had various supervisory and leadership assignments in six different flying organizations. He is a graduate of the School of Advanced Air and Space Power Studies and served as the Chief of Strategy for the Commander, Pacific Air Forces, responsible for wartime and contingency air power planning and the integration of air and space power into plans for the Commander, U.S. Pacific Command & Director, Commander's Action Group for the commander US Strategic Command. Colonel Tobin commanded the 9th Airlift Squadron and his combat experience includes director, KC-10 Operations for Operation DESERT STRIKE, Deputy Commander, 362nd Air Expeditionary Group, responsible for all C-17 and C-5 operations into Afghanistan, and Commander, 9th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron, C-5 Operations into Afghanistan. Most recently, Colonel Tobin served as the Commander, 97 Operations Group, Altus AFB, OK responsible for all C-17 and KC-135 initial, upgrade, and requalification training.

Colonel Tobin is a command pilot with approx 4,000 flying hours in T-37, SF-260D, C-141B, KC-10A, C-5 A/B, C-17 and KC-135 aircraft.

Deborah Viles
Top Scholarship Advisor

Deborah Viles works in the Office of Undergraduate Education as Assistant to the Associate Vice Chancellor, where she has two primary roles. In her role as Top Scholarships Advisor, Deborah works with students applying for nationally prestigious scholarships, like the Rhodes, the Truman, the Goldwater, and others. She advises students through the process from beginning to end, from identifying and publicizing opportunities, to providing feedback on application essays, to conducting practice interviews. Our students bring an amazing wealth of experience and achievement to the process.

As Assessment Coordinator for the Boulder campus, Deborah works closely with the Assessment Oversight Committee to encourage every campus department and unit to improve their programs through good assessment practice. The university is committed to making sure our students have the best experience possible while they are here, and assessment helps ensure we’re providing just that.

Deborah came to the Office of Undergraduate Education from the Program for Writing and Rhetoric, where she taught for many years and then moved to the administrative side as the Program Assistant. She’s worked on campus for twenty years. She earned her M.A. from CU in English Literature, Creative Writing.

When she’s not working you might find Deborah singing in Resonance Women’s Chorus, playing her clarinet, hiking, reading almost anything, or baking something decadent in her kitchen.
