Southern Ute Reservation-Native American Issues

Volunteers will be working on projects sponsored by the SunUte Community Center.  The goal of the Center is to give people in the community a change for recreations and better health and to improve the quality of life for the people living in the community.

Southern Ute reservation is located near the four corners area at the border of New Mexico and Colorado.

  

Goals of the Trip:

- To learn about Native American culture and issues they currently face.

- To learn about interactions between the people and non-Native community that they surround.

- Work on activities with the children and youth of the tribe and in the town of Ignacio.


TreeUtah - Environmental Issues
TreeUtah is a non-profit organization dedicated to the planting and care of trees in the state of Utah. TreeUtah's Mission is to improve Utah's quality of life by enhancing the environment for present and future generations through planting, stewardship and education.

Goals of this Trip:

- This trip will be focused on environmental issues and education

- Work with community in planting projects and participating in other community strengthening activities


Shiprock Home for Women and Children - Domestic Violence/Education

The Shiprock Home provides a temporary shelter for women and children that are victims of domestic violence.  Participants will deal with Issues such as domestic violence and education.  Work that volunteers would be doing is patch up (restoration) work, orientation for domestic violence social work and projects within the community. The shelter is funded by the Navajo Tribe.  

Goals of this Trip

  • To learn about and assist victims of domestic violence
  • To become advocates against domestic violence

 


YMCA Science Camp - Children

The YMCA Science Camp works with 5th and 6th grade students from the South San Francisco Bay area, which is an extremely diverse population.  The groups will participate in a leadership training on Monday, and serve as Cabin Leaders for the 5th and 6th grade students during the rest of the week. They spend the night in the cabins, supervise the kids during meals, are responsible for getting their group to activities on time, and assist Field Teachers during the day by helping with group management and occasionally assisting in the actual teaching of the environmental concepts. Goals of this Trip:

  • Work with children from a diverse population

  • Assist in educational activities

Habitat for Humanity - Low Income/Poverty
Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit organization that works to help develop affordable housing.
Participants will be working at a Habitat site helping to build as well as various other projects within the community.

Goals of this Trip:

  • Learn about issues of low income and poverty

  • Help and learn from a new community
