Leymah Gbowee is a Liberian peace activist, trained social worker and women’s rights advocate
widely recognized for her pivotal leadership role during the Women of Liberia Mass Action for
Peace movement that aided the end of Liberia’s civil war back in 2003. Her story is chronicled in
her memoir, Mighty be Our Powers, and in the award-winning documentary, Pray the Devil
Back to Hell.
Gbowee currently serves as a member of the High-Level Task Force for the International
Conference on Population and Development, Board of Directors of the Nobel Women’s
Initiative, Gbowee Peace Foundation, Federation of Liberian Youth, and the PeaceJam Found
amongst other organizations. She was awarded the Women’s Refugee Council’s Voices of
Courage Award (2014), and received honorary degrees from Rhodes University in South Africa,
the University of Alberta in Canada, Polytechnic University in Mozambique, Cedar Crest
College in the United States, and the University of Dundee in Scotland. Furthermore, Gbowee
holds a M.A in Conflict Transformation from Eastern Mennonite University in Virginia, USA
and she is a proud mother of six children.

2014 from 10:00am – 4:00pm.
