A little background....In 1989, a group of womyn within M.E.Ch.A. started Semana de la Xicana. They recognized the need to address issues of la mujer in the Chicana/o community. It is now an annual event dedicated to celeberating Chicana identity and herstory. This year, Semana de la Xicana includes sponsorship from Raza Womyn, a student group created to educate and support Xicana (pronounced "she-cana") conciousness on the CU Boulder campus.

*El Movimiento Estudiantil Chicana/o de Aztlán is not just a Mexican organization. Chican@ is a term of self-identification based on cultural, social, and political consciousness. Therefore, it is grounded in a philosophy, not a nationality. M.E.Ch.A. is inclusive of all raza (irrespective of nationality, sexual orientation, and gender) who struggle for the empowerment and liberation of our gente through higher education.

*Xicana: A more recent modification of the traditional term "Chicana." Based on an indigenous worldview and identity, this self-identification uses Nahuatl (the language or related dialect of the many indigenous groups in Mexico & SW U.S.) spelling and pronunciation to validate and embrace the indigenous heritage of the Xicana.

We are extremely grateful to the following organizations who have made it possible to hear the voices of Xicanas through these series of events:Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, Cultural Events Board, Vice President of Academic Affairs and Research, Chancellor's Fund for Diversity, Arts and Sciences Student Government, CU Police Department, Women's Resource Center, UCSU Representative Council, Department of Ethnic Studies
