LOWLAND PRESENTS ... THE FIRST OF MANY
APRIL 5 2004

REVIEW BY JUICE-D

Damn, it got hot in Trilogy on Saturday night. The kitchen crew and owners we’re shouting at the sound guy Bill because the bass kept knocking wine bottles off the shelves. Never mind that, I kept telling Bill to turn that shit up; we had to, the DJ’s were too fucking ill. If I could have turned the volume up so all of Boulder could hear I would’ve – but all of us in the Trilogy Lounge heard every hit.

Lola started the night off with some rare downtempo grooves, and primed the atmosphere nicely. We had our first drink rounds to the downbeat sounds that she provided, while we readied our ears for Technic 9 & Panther. This sick duo hoped up on the four turntables at around 10:05; the room was already filling nicely, and the house sounded really good. We turned the speakers up some more, and Technic 9 & Panther dropped the BEATS – including the Mario Brothers fireball level tune! Scratching and tagging this duo hyped the crowd. The prime moment of Lowland Presents came with Technic 9's first record drop, everyone was already so damn hyped that a roar arose from the room as his first record dropped. Technic 9, caught off guard, literally jumped with arms in the air at the sound of this … from this point on the party was started. MC’s Scottrohedron and GMC hopped on stage for a few hip-hop tempo tracks, flowing back and forth intermittently.

After Tech. 9 & Panther tagged for seventy-five minutes we stopped the music; and we brought on the Drum & Bass. It was Dirty Frank and Sharpshooter of B-Line Productions to follow. Needless to say this duo rocked the house, we turned the volume up a little more at this point. MC’s now back on stage; Scotty and GMC tagged along side Dirty Frank and Sharpshooter trading rhymes and crowd participation. It got hotter here. These B-Line hosts brought the heavy riff Drum & Bass tracks, more wine bottles bounced off the shelves in the back rooms, and I had a fifth gin and tonic.

Following Dirty Frank and Sharpshooter were our headliners for the evening; Meka-One and Shaman of Phuture Project and Lowland Apartments respectively. Our MC’s battled on, Scotty droppin’ fresh freestyles for the Trilogy crew: the noise on the dance floor went up higher, so we turned up the volume some more ... more broken wine bottles. Meka-One and Shaman dealt intoxicating blows, one after another, the basslines - massive, and the drum cracks - deadly. Heavy riffs made way to solid rhymes from GMC, representing the MFA crew, who delivered low-end vocals for the hysterical crowd that had amassed early on in the evening and stayed glued until the end. Meka-One and Shaman orchestrated a flawless tag team set leaving us in the crowd sweaty and parched. With the help of alcohol and adrenalin we raged on. At 1:45 the flashing bar lights signaled last call, a couple more tracks … and everyone headed to the afterparty.

Now, as if the Trilogy show wasn’t enough, we had to squeeze our way into Moonrise studios. The studio was packed, and the turntables already turning out DnB sounds. I threw up tracks with Dirty and Sharpshooter until six in the morning, with some guest MC’s trading off on the mike, and a dude with a harmonica – no shit – playing hella’fast melodies over DnB sections.

There’s never a dull moment when Lowland steps on the scene, harmonica and all we had a fucking party. Thanks to all of you who came out, and a special thanks to all of you who helped out and performed. This has officially been the first of very many. I look forward to next time, and I hope you do too. Peace and One-Love from the Lowland Crew. Peace ‘cause were not out…we’re in!
