March 1 - March 31

Arpilleras of Chile: Patchwork of Protest and Memory

The place: Chile. It is 1974, the second year of the military dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet. Already tens of thousands of people have disappeared, been killed, imprisoned and tortured. This year, a small group of women in search of their children, begin to embroider patchwork tapestries denouncing human rights violations in their country. Soon the "arpillera" workshops spread to other cities and began to draw international attention. By 1991, most of the workshops had closed as Chile sought to move towards democracy. But the arpilleras remain a graphic testament to the struggle for human rights and as a reminder that the dictatorship must be remembered. This exhibit includes 40 arpilleras and is displayed with descriptive text.
March 1 - March 31
Norlin Library, Third Floor Gallery (north-west wing)

Serve the People, Images of a Vision: Women and Children of the Black Panther Party

These 40 black-and-white framed photographs capture the spirit and vison of the Black Panther Party, particularly women and children, as expressed through the slogan "Serve the People." They go behind the headlines of the armed militants, focusing on the community programs for children and elders, the free health clinics, the student educational and tutorial programs. There are photographs of Party leaders meeting with heads of state and images of rank-and-file members. The exhibition, which includes a descriptive narrative, documents an extraordinary era in U.S. history with relevance for today.
