International Women's Week 2000

IWW 2000 will examine the connections between state violence and violence in the daily lives of women in the U.S. and abroad. In this context, "violence against women" includes the daily challenges facing women, especially women of color, resulting from:

increased unemployment and employment exploitation due to capital flight from the U. S.
[*]increases in the military and prison budgets correlated with dicreased funding for health, social welfare, and education
[*]racism and sexism in healthcare, including access to health care as well as racism and sexism in research and clinical studies

U.S. MILITARIZATION AND DOMESTIC ECONOMICS

[*]The military is 46% of the federal budget while social health cand welfare programs are less than 2%.
[*]How do these facts of the federal budget institutionalize race, class, and gender stratifications among women and people of color in U. S society?

U.S. MILITARIZATION AND GLOBAL ECONOMICS

[*]What is the U.S. military's role in imposing the western market economy throughout the world?
[*]What is the U.S. government's role in supporting oppressive regimes?
[*]How is weapons manufacturing Big Business for many contries' gross national product?
[*]Do U.S. taxpayers subsidize foreign contries' economies by paying for U.S. military bases in foreign countries?
[*]How do governments and multi-national corporations benefit from landmines and/or de-mining throughout Asia and Africa?
