Music is one of the most important elements in the art. It creates the atmosphere in which capoeira is most beautifully and powerfully expressed. Music is used to inspire the players to more spirited levels of interaction, and it is used to calm the action down when the game has become too heated. Rarely is there a capoeira roda (circle) without people playing instruments and singing songs. The game starts and ends at the feet of the instrument players.

The instrument section is lead by the berimbau, a musical bow that uses a gourd as a resonator. It's an ancient musical instrument that's originally from Africa. In most cases there will be 3 berimbaus, a low one (gunga),a mid range (medio), and a high pitched one (viola). 2 pandeiros (a type of tambourine), an agogo (a two tone bell), and a reco reco (a notched bamboo instrument).

There are several types of songs that are used in the capoeira angola setting, a ladainha, a louvacao and the corridos. The ladainha is the first song that you hear in the roda, it's an invocation/prayer/litany. The louvacao or praise songs follow and then come the corridos, which are the songs that are sung while people play capoeira. The coridos song text cover many different topics, many of these songs can be metaphors that reflect the action in the roda or that call for certain types of play in the roda.
