Spring 2008
- 1/17/08 – Space Internships
Night
- One of CUSEDS’ most well known events, the space
internship night is a chance for many upperclassmen /
graduate students to give a brief summary of an internship
they have previously held. Over the course of 3 minutes
each student describes the internship, who they would
recommend the job to, and the how to acquire that particular
internship. The opportunities represented this year were:
X PRIZE Foundation, United Space Alliance, Honeywell,
LASP, ATK, Air Force Research Labs, Naval Research Labs,
NASA Academy, and SEDS Affiliated Companies
- 2/20/08 – Eclipse Viewing,
(6:43pm)
- CUSEDS organized a location to view the solar eclipse
to appear on Feb 20th and received a large response for
this viewing. However the event was cancelled at the
last minute due to cloud cover.
- 3/5/08 – Guest Speaker: Dr.
Webster Cash
- Dr. Webster Cash of the CU Physics Department spoke
to CUSEDS about his work on an exo-planet finding telescope.
Dr. Cash’s research recently received a follow-on
study to determine the cost and feasibility of creating
a Hubble-sized telescope in conjunction with a large
star-shield to be placed in the field of view several
thousand miles away. Dr. Cash is confident that this
design would be a cost effective way (relative to other
concepts) to perform a spectral analysis on exo-solar
planets. His lecture went over his design, and attracted
large physics student crowd then what CUSEDS typically
sees.
- 3/9-12/08 – March Storm,
Lobbying on Capitol
- Four students received funding to travel to Capitol
Hill and educate congressional staffers of the current
state of the space industry and concerns which are present.
Unfortunately, two of the (graduate) students were not
able to attend at the last minute due conflicts with
their lab schedules. The event lasted for two days and
was successful, the traveling group was able to meet
up with a former CUSEDS member within the area.
- 3/19/08 – Guest Speaker:
John Healy
- John Healy is a seasoned employee of Lockheed Martian
working on the Orion project. Healy became the manager
of the Command/Service Module for North American after
the Apollo 1 fire and his leadership team played a key
role in readying the spacecraft for flight during the
difficult times. Healy’s role during the Apollo
program is played by Brandon Smith in “The Earth
to the Moon” HBO TV series. Healy spoke to a small
group of CUSEDS students around a table and discussed
the evolvement of his career starting as a student right
out of college to the leader of thousands of North American
employees. Healy also stated many of the life lessons
he has learned to the group and ensured that everyone
attending the lecture was involved. The presentation
was recorded and should soon be available to download.
- 4/12/08 – Yuri's Night events
- A CUSEDS Yuri’s Night committee was setup in
January to plan two events on April 12th: an outreach
session at the University of Colorado Fiske Planetarium
for students K-6 and an evening VIP / concert party.
The outreach event attracted ~800 students/parents to
the planetarium and featured free ice cream, raffles,
Yuri’s Night pencils (Russian Space Pens) and display
tables. The evening event started with a VIP reception
for 75 people and later evolved into a free-to-the-public
+21 concert featuring two bands and giveaways attracting
~400 people.

- 4/23/08 – Guest Speaker:
Dr. David Klaus / Semester Wrap up
- Dr. David Klaus, a professor of bioastronautics and
faculty advisor to CUSEDS spoke at the last CUSEDS “wrap-up” meeting
for the academic year. He spoke about his career as a
NASA mission operations specialist and his experiences
with the application process for the astronaut core.

OUTREACH EVENT
Peak-to-Peak Charter School
EVENT SUMMARY: CUSEDS did an outreach activity
for 7th graders at Peak-to-Peak Charter School. We taught
kids about space, NASA, and the Mars Rover. We also did
a hands on activity for the kids called "Rover Races".
This allowed kids to see how difficult it might be to
drive the rovers. We had a lot of fun and look forward
to more outreach activities next semester.
