Boulder Celebrates World Space Week

The University of Colorado at Boulder is hosting a World Space Week 2007 event to commemorate 50 years of space flight.  The kickoff will be held on October 4th at Fiske Planetarium, be co-sponsored by CU’s Students for Exploration and Development of Space (CU-SEDS), and will include several presentations by space professionals.  

Boulder, CO September 3, 2007 – October 4th will kick off World Space Week, the world’s largest public space event.  The University of Colorado at Boulder student chapter of Students for Exploration and Development of Space (CU-SEDS) will co-host the 50th annual celebration along with Fiske Planetarium, located on CU’s main campus in Boulder. 

Daytime events are free and open to the public. Admission for the keynote presentation at 7:30pm is FREE with a University of Colorado ID, $6 for adults, and $3.50 for children and seniors. Parking in Lot 308 is also free after 5:00pm. The day-long business-casual event will host three esteemed speakers and include food and beverages for attendees.

Schedule of Events and Speaker Biographies:

4:00-4:45pm Loretta Whitesides, founder of Yuri's Night, Zero G Flight Director, and Wired Space blogger, will present Space 101.  This presentation, geared towards those preparing for a career in space, is an inspiration and practical guide to making the transition from student to successful professional.

4:45-5:00pm Refreshment Break

5:00-5:45pm Ryan Kobrick, CU-Boulder Ph.D. student in Aerospace Engineering Sciences, will discuss his recently completed 4-month simulated Mars mission at the Flashline Mars Arctic Research Station in the high Canadian Arctic.

5:45-7:30pm Reception Hour – Informational booths on host companies will be open at this time

7:30-9:00pm Keynote Speaker Keith Gleason, manager of CU’s Sommers-Bausch Observatory (SBO).  His presentation, Sputnik & the Space Age, will take the audience on an historic tour of Boulder, documenting how it grew from a sleepy mountain town to a dynamic hub of space science research and innovation.
