The Denver Scholarship Foundation and CU–Boulder: A partnership to assist DPS students achieve their post-secondary goals

The Denver Scholarship Foundation (DSF) offers need-based scholarships to qualified Denver Public School (DPS) graduates and we are pleased to offer matching financial support for those exceptional students who receive DSF scholarships and enroll at CU-Boulder.

Beginning in 2008-09, all DSF recipients who attend CU-Boulder will receive a minimum of $2,000 per year ($1,000 per semester) grant aid from CU in addition to their DSF scholarships. If a student enrolls less-than-full-time (fewer than 12 credit hours) in a semester, the matching amount for that semester will be pro-rated. A student’s DSF scholarship amount is based the student’s Expected Family Contribution (EFC) which is determined by filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

At CU-Boulder, the DSF scholarship amount for 2008-09 will be $5,000 (EFC of 0 to 4041) or $6,000 (EFC of 4042 to 8082). CU-Boulder will be notified once a student is selected by DSF and we will automatically ensure the student receives the minimum $2,000 matching grant amount. There is no separate application required to receive the CU-Boulder matching award.

For a better understanding of what an eligible student’s financial profile and Cost of Attendance might look like, we’ve provided the examples below based on two different EFC values for an entering student in the UCB College of Arts and Sciences.

2008-09 Estimated Cost of Attendance*
Tuition/Fees Est. Books
and Supplies
On Campus
Housing
Other **Total
$7,278 $1,749 $ 9,860 $ 4,374$ 23,261
*Current year cost of attendance figures for the College of Arts and Sciences.
**Transportation, medical, and personal cost estimates can vary depending upon individual circumstances and spending habits.

For example, Family A files the FAFSA and receives a maximum Pell Grant award from the federal government (i.e. whose EFC equals zero). Family A has a household size of 3 with 1 child in college, and an adjusted gross income of $18,000. In comparison, Family B files the FAFSA and its result is an EFC of 8082. Family B has a household size of 4 with 2 children in college, and an adjusted gross income of $87,500.

At CU-Boulder, these students’ grant aid awards will consist of:

 Family A
(0 EFC)
Family B
(8082 EFC)
DSF Scholarship $ 5,000 $ 6,000
Matching CU-DSF Scholarship $ 2,000 $ 2,000
Federal Pell Grant$ 4,731 $ 0
Colorado State Grant$ 850 $ 0
Additional Grant * $ 3,650 $ 0
Minimum Total GRANT Aid$ 16,231$ 8,000
* Additional grants may include other federal, state or institutional awards.

In both of the examples above, a student will also be considered for other types of financial aid including work-study and loans, as well as other need-based or merit scholarships.

Students must apply to DSF for renewal each year, and if approved, will be eligible for renewal of the CU-Boulder matching award.
