A Record Season for Team Recycling!
Nebraska Game could Double the Season Record
With more fans than last year attending home games during the 2001 CU
Football season, CU Recycling scored a touchdown by recovering more than
6,273 pounds of recyclables from five home games. With increased effort
and a strong game plan, CU Recycling rushed to cover tailgaters, fans,
concessionaires, entrance gates and high traffic areas before the first
kick-off each gameday. Record numbers of Buff fans rallied to contribute
to the recycling victory. The success of the program can be attributed
to visible locations at tail-gate areas and entrance gates, efficient
collections as well as greater participation by fans and concessionaires.
Already CU Recycling has shut out last season’s total of 4,029 pounds
of co-mingled containers and hit an all-time high for materials recovered
for recycling. If all goes well at the CU v. Nebraska game, CU Recycling
expects to double the old record!
CU Recycling’s special events manager, Jon Ziegler, said there was great
participation for recycling this year. "Higher attendance boosted recycling.
More fans mean brought more bottles and cans to throw in our bins, " he
said. "We will do some off-season planning to continue to increase our
efforts and hope for even better participation to make next season a winner,
too."
So far, the special events teams intercepted 6,273 pounds of co-mingled
containers and 2,403 pounds of corrugated cardboard. By blocking this
much material from the waste stream, recycling at the 2001 football season
conserved the following resources:
- 14 forty-foot Douglas fir trees
- 8,400 gallons of water
- 72 pounds of air pollutants
- 4,922 kilowatt hours of electricity
- 13 cubic yards of landfill space
- 1220 gallons of gasoline
Thank you to all Buff fans for a great job of recycling this football
season!
