1. CU Recycling Report

Saving Trees from Day One: 5000 New Students Recycled 47,000 Pounds of Cardboard

CU Students helped recycle record amounts of cardboard in their first two weeks on campus. During residence hall move-in in August, CU Recycling collected and recycled 23.5 tons of cardboard - a 42 percent increase from last year's move-in period and the record highest amount of cardboard recycled during any move-in period at CU.

The move-in cardboard recycling effort saved CU an estimated $600 in trash disposal, in addition to saving 470 cubic yards of landfill space. The effort also conserved the equivalent of 286 40-foot trees; 165,000 gallons of water; and 96,643 kilowatt hours of electricity.

Mobile Phones, Ink Jet Cartrides Now Collected for Recycling in Residence Halls

Recognizing that most students do not realize the environmental effects of throwing away mobile phones, CU Recycling has placed special containers on campus to make recycling phones easy. Students and staff are encouraged to drop off their used phones, as well as inkjet cartridges, in recycling boxes now located in each residence hall office and at Wireless Outfitters in the UMC.

On average, mobile phones are replaced every eighteen months. Within three years, Americans will be throwing away 130 million phones per year which amounts to 65,000 tons of waste. Mobile phones contain a number of toxic chemicals such as arsenic, beryllium, copper, lead, cadmium, nickel and zinc. These toxins have been linked to cancer and neurological disorders.

2. Local Recycling Info

Boulder County Recycling Center Family Fun Tour

Learn how Boulder County's (including CU's) pop cans, milk jugs, newspaper and more are processed and made ready for shipment to places across the country. Free tours of the recently built county facility will take place on America Recycles Day, Saturday, November 15 from 11 am - noon. Fun for all ages! Boulder County's Recycling Center is located at 1901 63rd Street in Boulder. Please RSVP to 720-564-2223.

Fall Leaf Collection and Drop-off Programs

Leaves are a valuable soil amendment - don't just bag them up for your trash hauler to take to the landfill! Most municipalities in the Boulder area collect leaves curbside or offer drop-off locations for accepting leaves to turn into mulch, which is often then available to the public.

For dates and locations of local leaf collection programs, visit EcoCycle's website,

3. Industry News

Millions of Americans will celebrate recycling by participating in the 7th annual America Recycles Day at events throughout the United States on Saturday, November 15. America Recycles Day is celebrated nationally each year on November 15, a day set aside to promote the benefits of recycling and buying recycled products. Communities, businesses, governments and service organizations are organizing activities to educate and encourage increased participation in recycling and waste reduction programs.

Pledge to win! By pledging to renew your commitment to recycling at www.americarecyclesday.org, you will automatically be entered into a drawing to win one of several "green" prizes: a 2004 Ford Focus Partial Zero Emission Vehicle, one of five aluminum TREK 24-speed bicycles, a "Recycle Yourself Weekend" spa vacation package, and more. While you're on the ARD website, take a look at the nationwide events, or send a recycling E-Card to a friend!

4. Frightening Fact

Americans represent only five percent of the world's population, but generate 30 percent of the world's garbage.

5. Glimmer of Hope

It's getting easier for Americans to be "conscious consumers". The Center for a New American Dream has put together information on a new website to help consumers reduce their impact on the environment and contribute to improving social conditions in areas where products are made. Visit this site for a list of ways to shop to reduce waste.
