1. ***** Campus Earth Summit and Blueprint for a Green Campus *****
For the last seven years, the CU Environmental Center has sponsored
an annual "Campus Earth Summit", designed to provide a forum for students,
faculty, staff, and administrators to review CU Boulder’s environmental
performance as well as to examine the potential for reducing campus
environmental impacts. This challenge of environmental responsibility
is established by examining the campus’ institutional ecology and practices
of resource conservation, recycling, waste reduction, and environmentally
sound operations. This year’s Campus Earth Summit will be held April
16, 17, and 18. Sessions will explore construction and demolition waste
reduction, energy, transportation, green products purchasing, sustainable
design and green building, and environmental literacy. The Environmental
Awards Ceremony will kick-off the Earth Summit, recognizing extraordinary
efforts made by individuals and departments that significantly improve
the campus environment. This year’s awardees are: - Scott Harvey for
Reducing the Use of Hazardous Materials - Department of Housing for
Recycling - Ed von Bleichert for Outstanding Alumnus - Ginger Cassady
for Individual Achievement - Transportation Services for Departmental
Achievement - The Student Body for Energy Conservation - Joe Roy for
Alternative Transportation Immediately following the awards ceremony,
Tony Cortese will deliver a keynote address on "Responsibilities and
Opportunities for Universities to Lead the Way toward a Sustainable
Future". Tony Cortese is the Director of Second Nature and former Director
of the Tufts University Environmental Literacy Institute. Second Nature
helps higher education prepare future professionals for the environmental
and social challenges of the future so as to make the integration of
environmental thinking "second nature". Additionally, an Environmental
Career Fair at the Summit will host organizations to share their environmental
job and internship opportunities with interested stdents. Capping off
the Summit, a special panel will celebrate the history of 25 years of
campus recycling and lay out plans for the future of recycling on campus
and in the community (see below for more info). Last year, the Environmental
Center issued the Blueprint for a Green Campus: An Environmental Action
Plan for the University of Colorado at Boulder. The Blueprint lays out
challenging environmental goals and action steps for CU Boulder as demands
for energy, transportation, and resources increase. A just-released
2001 Update to the Blueprint lays out progress that has been made toward
the goals over the past year. The Blueprint and 2001 Update will be
discussed at the Summit. Both documents are online at http://www.colorado.edu/ecenter
