1. *************** Recycle Your Old Files! ***************

CU Recycling offers a number of special recycling services to campus offices who are cleaning, moving, or purging files. From picking up your sensitive documents and providing confidential destruction to delivering extra recycling bins and procedural information for your office cleanup, our recycling services help you save time, lower disposal costs and provide environmental benefits.

CONFIDENTIAL SHREDDING
Confidential materials will be picked up from your office and confidentially destroyed and recycled for a fee of $2.50 per box. A certificate of confidential destruction can be provided. Call 492-8307 or email cure@stripe.colorado.edu for more information.

ADDITIONAL BINS AND SPECIAL PICK-UPS
If you are cleaning out files, storerooms, etc. and have more recyclables than your recycling station can handle, special pick-ups and additional bins can be arranged. We can deliver containers for office pak, white paper only and for low grade/mixed papers, magazines, and catalogs during office cleaning. See Recycling Procedures/Materials Accepted below for more information on sorting and other materials we can collect. Please call 492-5321 a week in advance to schedule delivery and pick-up.

RECYCLING PROCEDURES/MATERIALS ACCEPTED
Office materials and files should be sorted for recycling as follows:

- Recycle as Office Pak:
(in desk-side container, central recycling container, or requested additional bin)

White paper, light and pastel-colored paper, computer paper, notebook paper, glossy paper, post-it notes, thermal fax paper, carbonless multi-copy forms (with goldenrod copy removed), white and light colored envelopes (windows OK), open and sorted mail, light colored file folders, index cards, plastic and metal spiral notebooks (with covers removed). Staples and paper clips OK.

- Additional recyclable materials:

Transparencies, tyvek envelopes, and computer diskettes -- Mailing Services has made recycling these materials possible by providing a special campus box for them. Place tyvek, disks, and transparencies in separate envelopes no thicker than 1/2 inch, label "disks for recycling", "transparencies for recycling", etc., and send through campus mail to Campus Box 209 for recycling.

Corrugated cardboard -- Flatten corrugated cardboard boxes and place small amounts behind central recycling bins or on campus building loading docks. For large quantities, call 492-5321 to schedule a special pick-up.

Campus mailing envelopes and reusable Kraft envelopes -- Send large, document-sized envelopes and extra campus mailing envelopes in good condition to Mailing Services, Campus Box 60, for re-use.

Magazines and catalogs -- Magazines, catalogs, and similar glossy materials can now be recycled at 30 special locations on campus. Call 492-8307 for the location nearest you.

Newspapers -- should be recycled in newspaper recycling bins at central locations or in the newspaper side of campus desk-side recycling containers.

Low grade/mixed papers -- The following items should not be placed in any campus recycling containers, but can be dropped off at our on-campus facility for recycling: dark and bright colored papers, non-reusable Kraft envelopes, goldenrod colored papers (including goldenrod copy of multi-copy forms), dark colored file folders, hanging file folders, books, single- layer paperboard.

Ink jet and printer toner cartridges -- Cartridges can be dropped off for recycling in special bins located at the Copy Centers in the Stadium, Regent, UMC, and Continuing Education.

Your attention to following these instructions during office cleaning is appreciated by the staff at CU Recycling. THANK YOU FOR RECYCLING!

2. *************** Local Recycling Info ***************

RESOURCE 2000 -- The Place to Buy and Donate Used Building Materials

According to the EPA, construction and demolition debris accounts for approximately 20% of the volume of U.S. landfills. ReSource 2000, a program of the Boulder Energy Conservation Center, seeks to recover and reuse this "waste", which is often good, used building material. For the remodeler, contractor or craftsperson, a walk through the ReSource 2000 yard in east Boulder yields many treasures. Building materials "with experience" that are accepted for donation and available for sale include cabinetry, doors, shutters, windows, lumber, fencing, ducting, ceramic tiles, hardware, and more. To purchase or donate materials, contact Resource 2000 at 303-441-3278. The yard, located on 63rd Street, half a mile south of Valmont, is open for shopping Monday through Saturday from 8 am to 5 pm.

3. *************** Industry News ***************

30% RECYCLED CONTENT PAPER PERFORMS TO INDUSTRY STANDARDS

Copier paper with 30 percent post-consumer content performs just as well as virgin paper and paper with lower recycled content, showed a study conducted by the Government Printing Office and three manufacturers of office equipment. The study was coordinated by Recycling at Work, a program of the US Conference of Mayors.

"The study adds validity, once again, to the old argument that performance, together with price and availability, should not be impediments to using recycled content copier paper," said Fran McPoland, the Federal Environmental Executive.

Two million sheets of paper were tested on a variety of copiers and printers. The 30 percent recycled content paper jammed in equipment 1.5 to 3.2 times for every 100,000 sheets. 20 percent recycled content paper jammed 2.8 to 2.9 times per 100,000 sheets, and virgin paper jammed 2.9 times per 100,000 sheets.

Here at C.U., many departments are successfully and satisfactorily using 100% post-consumer recycled content copier paper in copiers and printers, and the CU Copy Centers now offer Eureka 100 recycled paper on request for copy jobs.

Recycled copier paper is available on campus through the Distribution Center, CU Bookstore, or on order from Faison/Corporate Express (see Glimmer of Hope, below). Copies of the Recycling at Work report are available by calling 202-861-6776. More information on suppliers of 30 percent recycled content paper is available on the web site of the Office of the Federal Environmental Executive at http://www.ofee.gov/html/gsa.htm

4. *************** Frightening Fact ***************
THE AVERAGE AMERICAN CREATES 4.4 POUNDS OF GARBAGE EACH DAY

Americans produced 217 million tons of garbage in 1997, equal to 4.4 pounds per person, according to a feature article in Parade Magazine June 13. Other sobering information from the article include:

- The cost of handling garbage is the fourth biggest item in many city budgets, after education, police and fire protection.

- Household garbage in landfills, in order of its volume, consists mainly of cardboard, paper, yard trimmings and food waste.

- Landfills are "like giant Tupperware bowls", preserving trash, food, and legible newspapers for more than 30 years.

RECYCLED OFFICE SUPPLIES AVAILABLE AT STATE CONTRACT PRICES

The newest version of the Faison/Corporate Express catalog of State of Colorado contract office supplies offers more recycled content products. Recycled computer diskettes, copy paper, envelopes and transparencies have been added to the recycled steno books, writing pads, post-it notes and scratch pads that were already available.

When CU Boulder departments buy the diskettes, recycled by GreenDisk, and transparencies, made by 3M, you are "completing the recycling loop" since diskettes and transparencies collected by CU Recycling go to these companies to be made into new products!

Also, notice that delivery boxes from Faison/Corporate Express say "Return to CEX driver for recycling." Drivers take back boxes from previous orders for reuse. The boxes collapse instantly and easily can be stored beside your desk, and can be used again by Faison right away without adding volume to the campus recycling program.

To order a Colorado state contract office supplies catalog, call Faison/Corporate Express at 303-373-8499. For more information on recycling transparencies or computer diskettes, call CU Recycling at 492-8307.

6. *************** Get Involved ***************

Things you can do to reduce the amount of garbage you create:

1. Learn what materials are recyclable. Recycle at your office and at home.

2. Buy goods made from recyclable and recycled material, at your office and at home.

3. Avoid buying items with unnecessary packaging. Bring your own bags to the store.

4. Reuse things instead of throwing them away and constantly replacing them. Keep a reusable cup, plate, and silverware at work for lunches.
