  • Q: Thomas – does it seem more faculty, staff or students are out
  • A: Timmons – HR would like to keep track of staff and can better keep those numbers closer to accurate.
  • Hill - Is it true that only Boulder Health Department can give an official number of flu cases that are being confirmed?
  • A: Timmons does not have answers, had not heard anything on the subject of reporting structure.
  • FSAP has been very active. FSAP are preparing to send a ‘needs assessment survey’ which will be out toward the end of the month.

Vice Chair Report: Mike Roseberry: Tentative speaker for October, Derrick Watson from EH&S on emergency preparedness from the EH&S perspective.

Guest Speaker(s):  Alphonse Keasley from ODECE – Assistant VC for Community Outreach

·        There are four components of ODECE, firstly pre-college outreach programs. Previous CU outreach programs have been consolidated under ODECE.

·        Student success – CU lead alliance, Leadership Excellence Achievement and Diversity are academic neighborhoods within each of the schools and colleges within divisions

·        Faculty success – how to bring in under-represented faculty, in any group of peoples and issues of retention.

·        Camus Climate and Community Engagement – Campus climate represents how people interact including students, faculty and staff. How to engage together creating and living in a productive environment.

·        Alphonse meets with the chairs of the four Chancellors Advisory Committees to look at what’s happening with some components of the CU community, ‘family’.

§         Committee on Minority Affairs

§         GLBT

§         Chancellors Committee on Women

§         Program for Accessibility

·        Retreat scheduled for September 18 to discuss ideas on creating ‘joint projects’, to develop ways of continued communication with members of the CU ‘family’. People of the university community will be attending.

·        Many goals have been accomplished and objectives have been met since the ‘blueprint for diversity’ was presented ten years ago by Ophelia Miramontes, written through information and research through ‘campus communities.’

·        We are now going through accreditation, relative to diversity, many things were being done, but the accrediting team felt different things were possible.

·        A group is being put together now to assist with development of updated blueprint for diversity and inclusion plan.

·        Alphonse and VC McKee discussed how to develop a steering committee and who will be the ‘community’ involved. Flagship 2030 may be used as a format to identify critical elements of diversity and inclusion which is part of our campus community.

·        Communication will be out soon seeking ideas on how this plan can be implemented to include all of the Boulder and campus community.

·        Community engagement has become a key issue with many Universities and is being taken seriously. The Carnegie group, evaluation ratings for campuses, has included it in their list of review items.

·        Campus Climate and Community Engagement’s efforts are to unite the campus community with the Boulder community in a pleasant and accepting manner, and to create the best environment for us to accomplish our work.

·        November 2nd & 3rd is the annual diversity summit which is for “everybody”. All campus persons should feel that they are a part of this in an interactional mode.

·        Q: J. Davis – A retiree and parent of a CU student asked for a web location to find all events open to the public. Davis replied that the listings are under individual department or event organizations.

·        A: Keasley - A community calendar is available through UCOM, University Communications. It’s up to the individual orgs to get their information to UCOM for posting.

·        Keasley will bring this issue to UCOM and has already taken steps to ask campus organizations to provide event listings.

·        Q: J. McKee – please provide info on Diversity Summit and how it can benefit campus. McKee would like to communicate with constituents on focus.

·        A: Keasley - This years summit will be structured three ways:

o       Something inspirational about why we continue to do what we do

o       Skill building sessions with regard to diversity and inclusion in the workplace/classroom

o       Thought provoking events, which have not been completely decided upon.

·        Q: L. Faudree – SC previously had a diversity committee. Belief was that it was dissolved due to duplication of functions. SC had a mentoring program – assistance to new staff members in any way we could help get them familiar with campus.  Involvement with the city of Boulder, a grant application was written for funding request for Global Jam, in partnering with the Boulder community and having their involvement with Global Jam event.  Due to apparent animosity, SC was given little credibility although grants were being freely given to other requested involvements, seeming to have less community connection.

·        A: Keasley – SID, sub-committee on inclusion and diversity is focused on these kinds of matters. Also the HRC is involved in partnering with community. The goal is to have these relationships not ‘surge’, but be developed over time for long lasting stable environments.

·        Q: Roseberry – Community engagement has become a buzz word, what can we do to define this and what can we do to apply strongly in the community.

·        A: Keasley – An ideal to work for is to partner with various parts of the institution’s home community and offer our university’s expertise. Design activities from university and community and have those attended by both groups, having the highest levels of community and university sponsor events.

·        Q: J. Davis –  In the past, promotions were put out about expert speakers, where can we find out about this now, about specialty issue speakers?

·        A: Keasley – Inside CU, the internal news presentation, different than S&G. Sometimes there may not be space.

·        Q: Oliveras – What changes have we seen in diversity and inclusion? It doesn’t appear that much progress has been made in retention through the years.

·        A: Keasley – The office is currently focused on what’s happening with staff. The last diversity summit was focused on staff with the least access to advancement. What can be done to help the children of these lesser paid staff, computers, and learning access?

Action Items:

Delegate Reports

Boulder Campus Planning Commission – Hill –

  • BCPC will meet on September 10th.
  • Discussions will be schematic design for basketball, volleyball practice facility, the schematic design for Williams Village 2A, the program plan for Kittredge Commons and the quarterly report for BCPC.

Boulder Faculty Assembly – Roseberry –

  • Was not able to get to September 3rd meeting.
  • Roseberry asks if there is an interested person available to represent SC at the BFA.
  • Meetings are held at 4:00 – 5:30 the first Thursday of each month.

Chancellors Advisory Committee on Multi Cultural Affairs – Douvres–

  • Discussion about the perception of CACMA being supportive for people of color only.
  • With ODECE providing services previously done by CACMA, maybe CACMA can explore the smaller elements on campus causing tension, becoming an action unit rather than reaction.
  • Questions about what CACMA mission or function has been main discussion for several months.
  • Diversity Summit upcoming November 2nd and 3rd. Funding for 2009 summit will be extremely limited.

Chancellor’s Executive Committee – Hill –

  • Meeting held at EH&S in August, EH&S and CUPD Joe Roy gave presentation on emergency preparedness.
  • Legislative update done from work complete from last session.
  • CU Administration is breaking down last spring’s legislations info into many smaller bills. One key bill to CU is the international enrollment rates.
  • Introduction to a bill to let CU decide its own tuition enrollment rates, which would put the decision with the Board of Regents.
  • The enrollment census is to be done September 11th, so will provide numbers on enrollment percentages at that time.
  • Fac Man planning has been asked to break down costs of projects into monthly projections indicating review of smaller increments of time regarding budget.

Statewide Liaison Council – Oliveras/Anderson/Faudree – No report

University of Colorado Staff Council – Testarmata –

  • UCSC nominated and elected a voluntary secretary as a result of the 60% budget cut, no paid secretary is available.
  • The annual UCSC retreat will be October 16th & 17th. Logistics and coverage of retreat were discussed.
  • Q: With a 60% budget cut, how can the UCSC afford overnight retreats?
A: The retreat was reduced to a one night retreat rather than two, provided food will be decreased and lodging has been consolidated with three members housing together.
  • It was determined that it was beneficial to keep an overnight retreat in order to have members from wide spread areas spend more than a few hours together. Many considerations have been given to enable costs to remain efficient
  • Boulder SC pays any travel for our delegates, rarely will there be any reimbursement asked for.
  • With the severe budget cuts, UCSC reviewed options and felt most important functions were to reserve a one night retreat and the Staff Service Excellence Awards, $1000.00 for one staff member from each campus.

  • Meeting held September 3rd, various ideas on communications discussed, community calendar, president’s news letter, depending on cost and word limitations.
  • We would like to ask for input as a collaborative effort for topics or formats for information that will go out.
  • The Boulder Chamber of Commerce will be contacted to ask for local merchants who give current UCB discounts.
  • UCB HR will turn over the employee discounts program to SC, going through the SC web site to connect to discounts.
  • We’re hoping Frank Bruno could be a source of information for Boulder merchants if Chamber of Commerce doesn’t provide support.
  • Piatt – The President’s newsletter is basically for system wide information, not specific to one campus focus.
  • Hill – explains that from the previous Exec. Board meeting, Ana Johnson (HR) visited with us about the work life benefits section of their web site. The listings on the UCB site are different that state site, local benefits not necessarily available on the state work life benefit site.
