ABOUT THE PROGRAM
The Service Learning program offers students the opportunity to learn about Hispanic cultures and to use and improve in a real life environment the Spanish speaking skills they have acquired in a classroom setting.  At the same time, this program provides our community partner schools and agencies with dedicated volunteers who help with school activities and provide academic tutoring.  Students who have volunteered through Service Learning have considered participation in the program to be a positive and rewarding experience.

WORK LOAD AND CONTRACT
Students who participate in the Service Learning program will engage in 24 hours of volunteer work during the semester (usually 2 hours of service per week for 12 weeks).  Their duties vary from homework help, tutoring in reading, writing, computers, math, arts, and music, to organization of field trips, games, sports and recreation.  All participants must sign a contract with the Student Learning Program.  These will be distributed in your Spanish class during the third or fourth week of the semester.

COURSE CREDIT AND EVALUATION
Students will be evaluated based upon: 1) fulfillment of service hours and 2) completion of an interview with the instructor or a brief class presentation.  Near the end of the semester students must pick up a Student Performance Evaluation from their supervisor and turn it in to their CU Spanish instructor.  It is the student’s responsibility to give his or her evaluation to the instructor in order to receive credit for participation in the program.  Students will also be expected to complete a brief evaluation of their own Service Learning program experience. Please note that all students must be passing the class with a C- or better in order to receive credit for Service Learning participation.

SPAN 1020
Participation in the Service Learning program will substitute for one-half of the participation grade with the expectation of 24 hours of volunteer service.

SPAN 2110/2120/2150
Participation in the Service Learning program will substitute for one-half of the participation grade with the expectation of 24 hours of volunteer service.

SPAN 3000
Span 3000 students may substitute participation in the Service Learning program for 3 quiz scores with the expectation of 24 hours of service.

Participation in the program does not substitute for the regular participation in the classroom activities and for other requirements on the course syllabus.

ORIENTATION SESSIONS
There are two orientation sessions where you can learn more about the programs with the coordinators from the schools and organizations. Please try to attend one of these orientations to be held in McKenna 103:
Thursday, September 3, 12:00-1:00 pm   or   Friday, September 4, 10-11 am

If you are unable to attend either of these meetings, you may learn more about our community partners at our website (http://www.colorado.edu/spanish/servlearn) or at the informational bulletin board across from McKenna 103. Once you decide where to volunteer it is your responsibility to contact the program and make arrangements to interview and arrange your volunteer schedule. Then notify your instructor of your volunteer plans. (Some coordinators may have changed but the organizations still work with the Spanish Department and Service Learning).  Some of the programs where you may volunteer:
