Applying to Our Graduate Program (On-Line Materials)

Printer-friendly version of this page

Dear Applicant:

Thank you for your interest in our graduate program. The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Colorado at Boulder offers its graduate students the very best professional training and mentoring, and we look forward to receiving your processed application and supporting documents.

From this page it's possible to download the forms necessary to complete your application to our graduate program. To do this, your computer must have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed.

Also, please be aware that we must receive all materials by December 14, 2007 for students to be considered for admission for Fall 2008. The following are the steps necessary to apply to our graduate program:

Step 1: Go to the Apply Yourself webpage managed by the University and submit your application on-line.

If you choose not to apply electronically and instead wish to download and print out the application forms, please note that all documents must be sent to the Department of Spanish and Portuguese along with the $50 application fee (Domestic Applicants) or the $70 application fee (International Applicants). Checks or money orders (cheques bancarios o giros postales) obtained to pay the application fee must be made out to the "University of Colorado" and be payable in US$.

Step 2: Applicants must provide us with two copies of official transcripts from all institutions they have attended. Transcripts from US institutions must be sent to the Department of Spanish and Portuguese by the institutions themselves. We will not accept transcripts from these institutions sent to us by applicants. We will, however, accept notarized copies of transcripts from foreign universities.

Step 3: Applicants must provide us with four letters of recommendation. Recommenders must send their recommendation letters directly to the Department of Spanish and Portuguese by mail or fax (303.492.3699). Letters converted into PDF format (with recommender's signature) may also be emailed to spanport@colorado.edu.

Step 4: All applicants are required to submit a 10-15 page writing sample written in Spanish. Please also include a one-page abstract written in English. The paper should focus on the applicant's area of interest and include pertinent bibliography.

Step 5: Applicants who wish to receive TA positions in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese must submit the Application for Teaching Assistantship Form.

Step 6: All international applicants to our program whose native language is not English will need to score at least 80 on the Internet-based version (550 on the paper exam or 213 on the computerized exam) of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) in order to be admitted.

Step 7 (optional): Applicants wishing to be considered for the competitive Devaney, CHA, or Chancellor's fellowships are strongly encouraged to take the GRE general test and submit their official scores. This test is not mandatory for admission or for consideration for teaching assistantships.

Please note that all materials must be sent to the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, not to the University of Colorado at Boulder Office of Admissions or the Graduate School. The address is:

Graduate Program Assistant
Department of Spanish and Portuguese
University of Colorado at Boulder, 278 UCB
Boulder, CO 80309-0278 USA

Applicants will not receive correspondence regarding the progress of their application until the Application Fee and the appropriate Application forms are received.

Allow me to conclude by stating that ours is a dynamic, intellectually demanding program with excellent resources for graduate study in Spanish and Portuguese. Should you have any questions or concerns about our graduate program, please do not hesitate to contact me. For questions about the application process, please contact our Graduate Program Assistant.
