Sociology 4035

THIRD EXAM - TAKE HOME

This exam consists of two questions. Question A is for students who wrote their views on stratification the very first day. Students who joined the course later should answer question A'. Question B is for ALL students.

  1. In light of your learning during the semester, write a critique of your original views on stratification. How much did you already know? Were your views insufficient to give you a solid grasp of the stratification system? Were they close to the sociological standpoint? Did your views changed because of the information and theories you learned during the semester? (40 percent)

A'. Select a current newspaper article or magazine article about a stratification related topic (e.g., welfare, unemployment, the declining middle class, contingent workers, strikes, etc.); outline how the issue is presented to the public and how the stratification system is portrayed, and write a critical assessment using the information and theories discussed in class and in your texts. Append the article to your exam. (40 percent).

B. Compare and contrast the information provided in tables 2, 3, 4 and 5 (pp. 27-30) in S. J. Rose, SOCIAL STRATIFICATION in the United States. Using your readings and class lectures, discuss the connections between class, gender and race depicted in the tables.
