Sociology 4035

  1. Stratification systems can be described on the basis of five basic characteristics:
    1. the degree to which they are open or closed
    2. the basis for class and status placement
    3. the major forms of legitimation
    4. the dominant form of inequality
    5. the comparative level of inequality On the basis of your knowledge of American society, class lectures, information provided throughout the semester, and your readings, describe the U.S. stratification system.
  2. Throughout the semester we have examined class, socioeconomic,

race/ethnic, and gender stratification. Discuss the most important social and individual effects of each form of stratification and examine some of the ways in which the intersections of class, gender, and race/ethnicity affect individuals' life chances, forms of political consciousness, family life, and general well being.

3). What is the effect of social stratification upon economic

and political power? How is power distributed in American
society? What are some of the major channels through which
powerful maintain their privileged economic and political
situation? How does the current distribution of power
affect the majority of the population? Give especial
attention to the effects upon minorities, households headed
by women, children, and the working class.

4) Mobility is a complex phenomenon that includes structural

and individual dimensions. Structurally, mobility can
occur relatively independently from individuals' commitment
to hard work and the attainment of skills and educational
credentials. On the other hand, while the stratification of
the country remains relatively constant, individuals can
and do achieve some degree of mobility throughout their
lives and in comparison with their family of origin.
Explain these statements, examining the causes and results
of "forced or structural" mobility as well as the
determinants of individuals' status attainment, taking into
account race, ethnic and gender differences in mobility.
Finally, in a continuum from closed to open, where would you
locate American society? Why? Be specific and give examples
     if possible.
