Wilderness Adventures Have you ever thought about what it would be like to spend a night out in the woods without shelter? What would you do? If so, this class may be for you. In our one-week together, we will learn many skills that can help you travel safely through the wilderness of mountains that surround us. We will learn how to find our way through difficult terrain using a map and compass, as well as how to choose safe routes and avoid common mistakes. We will also learn how to build shelters, track animals, walk like coyotes, identify plants, keep warm, and even gain some backcountry cooking skills. We'll learn about lightning, avalanches, animals, and other potential threats. Mostly, however, we will be having fun in the outdoors. Our last day will be spent on a high alpine hike practicing our skills and perhaps getting a "solo" wilderness experience. By the end of the week, you will not only know which basic materials are necessary for every hike you do, but you'll have increased confidence for being in the backcountry. Please note: This is a field class with daily hiking in varied terrain. A keen interest in hiking and exploring the wilderness is therefore important. Students will be transported in university vans with a trained driver. Students need sturdy walking shoes, wading shoes, hats, sunscreen, daypacks, waterproof windbreaker, water bottle, a non-peanut snack and bag lunch each day. CLASS CODE: WAD/7 |
