Ice Research and Life at the Poles

The world is currently celebrating the International Polar Year (IPY), a two-year period focused on scientific research conducted in the Arctic and Antarctic. Melting glaciers are alarming people about the state of Earth's climate. Learn how ice cores provide information about our past climate to help us understand our future. Buoys measure the thickness of the ice in the arctic to reveal the impact on animals such as the polar bear. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV's) enable flights over the ice to collect information about surface melt ponds. Join in with thousand of others from around the world to explore the science of the polar regions and learn about research conducted on the ice! We will conduct our own ice experiments, launch a virtual balloon, and compare life in your town with life in the Arctic.
