Science Discovery Celebrates 25 Years!
Science Discovery began in 1983 as a pilot program of 10 summer classes at CU's Fiske Planetarium under the direction of Fiske's Director, David Aguilar. In the fall of 1983,Carol McLaren joined the staff at Fiske to oversee the development of the program. In 1985 the program became known as Science Discovery as part of the School of Education, with Carol McLaren as its director. In 1986 Ellen Brock joined the staff of Science Discovery serving as associate director and coordinator of the summer and after-school class programs.
Over the years, Carol and Ellen oversaw the addition of Science from CU, classrooms presentations (statewide), Science Explorers, professional development for teachers (also a statewide program), and the Wilderness Camps program. In January 2006, Science Discovery welcomed Jeffrey Kidder as its new director. Dr. Kidder comes to Science Discovery from Rutgers University where he was a professor of Biology and Science Education.
With our 4 core programs and other special projects, Science Discovery annually serves an estimated 25,000 students and 1,200 teachers statewide.
As we celebrate our 25th anniversary, we salute Carol and Ellen for their vision and thank them for their time and devotion to growing Science Discovery into the unique and comprehensive program that it is. |
