Meet the McNair Program Scholars

Gaby Nagy: Gaby is a senior graduating from the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience. Currently, she is working on research exploring the effectiveness of Dialectical Behavior Therapy for adolescent parents. Following graduation, she will continue conducting research in psychology working with Latino populations and postpartum women. In August, she will move to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to pursue a Clinical Psychology Ph.D. program. Her research there will focus on adapting treatments for depression in Latinos. Professionally, one day she hopes to have a private practice, conduct research and teach at the university level.

Sarah Deacon:
Sarah is a transfer student from the West Coast. She will graduate in December with a BA in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology. Her research this summer focuses on elucidating communication preferences for Latino patients in regards to establishing advance directives, or end-of-life care plans. She is also busy volunteering for HospiceCare of Boulder and Broomfield Counties, dancing in a belly dance troupe, and studying for her MCAT. She is considering application to MD-MPH (master in public health) programs this fall.

Zack Newman: Zack is from Trinidad, Colorado, and will be in his fifth year as a mathematics major. His research project is on modeling growth of whales by revising the current geometric model in use. He plans to attend graduate school to get his PhD in pure mathematics and hopefully become a professor at a university or college. He enjoys playing basketball, working out, hiking, and playing video games among many other things. |

Ben Gallaher: Ben is an EIT Civil Engineer with an emphasis in Structural Engineering. Currently, Ben is working on strength development of Recycle Aggregate Concrete. Ben plans to continue his research at CU and work towards his masters degree. He was born in Denver Colorado and grew up in solar powered house in Idaho Springs. His hobbies outside school include snowboarding, crossfit, and rally car racing.

Jenna Gallegos: Jenna is currently in her fourth year at CU where she is preparing to graduate with a degree in Molecular, Cellular, Developmental Biology and a minor in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. Her rural Colorado background has inspired her to apply her passion for molecular biology to agricultural research. Next fall, she hopes to begin the pursuit of a doctoral degree in a cross-disciplinary program, applying molecular genetics to seed development. When she is not in the lab, she cooks and hangs out with her friends and family, or explores the Rockies with her husky.

John Jennett: John is a senior majoring in Environmental Studies and Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. He is working with Dr. Diana Nemergut studying how forest dieback from invasive pine beetles is affecting carbon and nitrogen cycling and microbial community structure and function in Colorado's forests. John also serves as the Environmental Studies undergraduate curriculum representative to help in furthering ENVS curriculum. He will be applying for graduate school this fall where he hopes to study how human activities impact soil biota and nutrient cycling processes in terrestrial ecosystems.
