SOSR – Student Organization for the Study of Religion

Welcome to the SOSR web page. You can contact our organization at this email address. SOSR is a student organization at the University of Colorado created to provide a forum for graduate and undergraduate students to participate in the department of religious studies. SOSR has two main functions; to provide a voice for the student community and to carry out numerous activities elected by the students. We have a number of on-going projects including:

  • Organizing departmental lectures- SOSR has aided in bringing lectures to our department, including: Dr. Ronald Grimes (spring 2007), Dr. Russell McCutcheon (fall 2007)
  • Discussions with student-faculty liaisons- SOSR has allowed student voices to be heard by the faculty in matters as important as hiring new faculty positions and determining the structure of the curriculum
  • SOSR Movie Night- On going student/faculty activity of viewing and discussing popular films with a religious dimension

SOSR is committed to being an organization for the students. This is reflected in the structure of the organization. There are to be four permanent administrative positions; two graduate and two undergraduate, composed of one senior member and one junior member for both the undergraduate and graduate positions. It is our hope that by organizing the admisitrative body in such a way we are better able to represent the needs and concerns of both the incoming and outgoing student body. These positions are annually elected posts which hold the responsibility of implementing the decisions of the student body.

Next Journal, however, has a slightly different structure with three main branches. There are general editors, copyeditors and technical editors. These three positions, combined with the larger selection committee (most often composed of the broader graduate class) make up the general structure of the organization, but the roles are often shared, as well as the responsibilities. Although our peer review process is conducted in a double-blind fashion, one of the main aims of the journal is to give students an opportunity to experience the editing process from as many perspectives as they're willing to participate in. As such, oversight is shared by individuals at all levels of the process in an effort to maximize the mutually beneficial aspects of the publishing experience.
