Closing: A few Points
- The main paradigm invoked here seems to be two
fold:
- 1. Through the power of one's devotion (bhakti)
and the grace of god, one can attain liberation
- 2. One most clearly expresses this devotion by
traveling on pilgrimage to K@^$ and performing
austerities.
- Any connections???
- Communitas?? Perhaps, but it is secondary to
the larger issue of one's personal performance and devotion.
- If I assert that this is an archetypal Indian
pilgrimage (its characteristics, charaters, observences, etc. are appropriated
by other pilgrimages) do you agree?
- Does that happen in other contexts? Yes, Shikoku,
yes, Lourdes. Others??
- Can we consider this pilgrimage a mandala? Doubtful,
this honor seems better suited for the pa^cakro^a pilgrimage.
- Can we compare the role of the pa%das
to that of the church, EPE, walt, or the temple priests at Shikoku?
- Is the Sankalpa (the statement of intention)
what distinguished daily bathers and tourists from pilgrims, if so what does
this say about disney, what is their sankalpa?
- Is a semantic explaination of pilgrimage possible?
