- This temple is detected to Vishnu
in his incarnation as Krishna. (The name literally
means drop of Krishna).
- This place was established, according
to tradition, when a great sage, Agni Bindu, was offered a boon from Vishnu.
He asked Vishnu if he would reside here forever
teaching liberation to all Kashi devotees. Vishnu
granted the request and said that he would stay here even during the dissolution
of the universe.
- Before the Muslim conquest between the
12th and 17th century, and even for periods during this time, this temple dominated
the river bank. It was often called the most impressive temple along the river
by early western explorers.
- However, the present temple at this
Ghat is
a poor reconstruction of the earlier temples which had previously crowned
this Ghat.
- Pilgrims also light lamps (Dipas)
here, especially during the month of Kartikka (October/November) as offerings
to the ancestors so that they may find their way through the liminal world.
