Adi Keshava

Ghat

  • The orginal (Adi) Keshava (Vishnu).
  • This is the place where Vishnu first set foot in Kashi.
  • This is the place of the confluence of the Varana river with the Ganga.
  • This site is completely flooded during the rainy season. As such it reminds us that this pilgrimage is done only in the winter, spring and summer.
  • It would seem that this was the historic center of the city, even though it has currently shifted much to the south. As such, it is one of the oldest pilgrimage sites in the city.
  • It is said that here at these confluence, Vishnu bathed his sacred feet and as a result, the water here is 'supercharged' with his energy. It is called padodaka (foot-water.)
  • Like many sites which were famous in ancient times it is not visited by many pilgrims. The only people who come here are going on the PanchaTirtha pilgrimage.
  • Pilgrims have Darshan of a Linga established by Brahma here.
