Graphic Standards

Standards—of any sort—usually come into being to ensure quality and reputation. Graphic standards for CU's visual identity are intended to guide the use of graphic elements associated with the University of Colorado in such a way that

  • the general public always and immediately recognizes that a publication or item bearing CU's graphic elements is associated with CU,

  • the reaction to those elements is always positive, and

  • the image of CU is enhanced by the way its products and publications are presented.

Some of you may have the University of Colorado Graphic Standards Manual, which is still in effect with some minor revisions. This section provides an overview of basic CU system identity issues addressed in that manual. For more detail, consult the manual.

The University of Colorado Seal In the 1970s the Board of Regents adopted the university seal as its official mark, allowing no one else to use it, except on diplomas, official certificates, commencement programs, and selected other publications that are issued by the university as a whole.

The Interlocking CU Lettermark Although users were originally required to use the interlocking CU with the appropriate signature (University of Colorado at Boulder), this practice has proved too cumbersome and inappropriate for many publications that must also include other names and graphic elements. Consult the University of Colorado Graphic Standards Manual for appropriate placement of the lettermark, which may not be used as a design element and may not be altered in any way.

The interlocking block letters CU constitute the lettermark. The logotype for The University of Colorado is Times Roman Semibold. When used together, the lettermark and logotype form the CU signature.

CU Colors The official CU colors are silver and gold (not black and gold). Their PMS colors for professional print jobs are PMS 423 Silver/Gray and PMS 116 Gold/Yellow or, when metallic is required, PMS 877 Silver Metallic and PMS 873 Gold Metallic.

Stationery Items All units that represent the teaching, research, or public service functions of CU should use the standard stationery items (letterhead sheets, envelopes, mailing labels, and business cards) for their business and professional correspondence. Only the Boulder campus Alumni Association and Department of Intercollegiate Athletics are authorized by the Board of Regents to use their own marks on standard stationery items. Place orders for standard stationery items with Printing Services.

Boulder Campus Visual Identity The new Boulder campus wordmark, endorsed by Chancellor Byyny, was introduced in the summer of 1997 and should be used on all public communications. Each dean has received a packet of information that includes Macintosh and PC disks with the new wordmark as well as a graphic standards booklet that explains its approved uses.

The wordmark must be used in exactly its approved typeface, proportions, and sizes and is available on disk and in print (with the accompanying Visual Identity Guidelines) from Publications and Marketing or Printing Services.
