Writing Tip #7: Transition Signals for Comparison and ContrastWriting comparison and contrast essays isn't difficult if you remember to show both sides of the discussion, what is similar and what is different. But you will want to build bridges. Transitions are especially important when you move from similarities to differences; you need to "flip" the reader to the opposite perspective.
Some terms that may help you signal contrasts are listed below. As you read them, try to think of a sentence in which you might use these transition terms.
yet (Here's an example: Americans are proud of their traditions, yet they are not afraid of new ideas.)
however
alternatively/alternately (Look up the different meanings for these words as used in these examples: Alternatively, you may choose not to go on the trip. Alternately, the electric current reverses its direction.)
but
despite/or in spite of
nevertheless
not
rather than
conversely
on the contrary, or to the contrary
although
by contrast/in contrast/contrasting (to)
unless
On the other hand, you may want to show similarities, and the following terms may help you do so:
i.e., ("id est" means "that is") note the comma
likewise
