Project Title: Bionanomaterials for the construction of artificial blood vessels
Project Description: This project involves the construction of artificial blood vessels (or vascular biografts) using endothelial cells and smooth muscle cells seeded in a collagen-based nano-biocomposite. The goal of this project is to optimize the components in the collagen composite matrix for proper cellular activities and matching biomechanical properties with native blood vessels. Biomechanical property, cell structure and biology in the matrix materials will be characterized.
Requirements:
Knowledge in physiology, cell biology and chemistry are desired.

Project Title: Characterization of biomolecule binding on a PEG-coated nano-biosensor
Project Description: This project involves thin-film preparation and biomolecule binding characterization on the surface of nanomaterials. The surface of nanomaterials will be modified with antifouling polyethylene glycol (PEG) thin-film using different methods. The PEG chain ends with antibodies specific for a particular analyte in a biological sample such as blood. The goal of the project is to decrease nonspecific binding of biomolecules on the nanomaterials so as to increase the detection accuracy of the analyte specifically bound to the surface of nanomaterials. Herein, nonspecific binding or biomolecules on nanomaterials will be studied using molecules such as albumin and fibrinogen, the most abundant proteins in the blood. Specific binding will be studied using strepavidin-biotin.
Requirements:
Knowledge and background in biomolecule interaction and organic chemistry are desired.
