Mentor Training For some, mentoring comes naturally. For most, however, mentoring can include challenges where all too often one "learns the hard way". All mentors, regardless of their level of mentoring experience and skill, can benefit from the sharing of experience and practice. Research validates our every day experience that the quality of mentoring greatly influences the quality of the research experience for undergraduates.
This mentor training is designed to provide participants with practical information that is useful when working with undergraduates. The intent of this training is to help foster a more productive working relationship, early in the undergraduate's time in the lab, maximizing how meaningful and satisfying the research experience is for all involved. Experienced mentors will share tips as well as pitfalls to avoid. The Mentor Training will be facilitated by faculty and the BSI staff. The training will be for three hours on a weekday evening. It will be followed by a one hour weekday session several weeks later, to allow for practice and further sharing of experience. The following topics will be covered:
