Vision/Mission Statement

The Biological Sciences Initiative (BSI), a program of the University of Colorado at Boulder (UCB), envisions scientific literacy among all citizens, increasing their understanding of the relevance of science to their lives and empowering them to make informed health, environmental and political choices. To promote diversity and inclusiveness in the sciences and scientific literacy, BSI provides research, classroom, and professional development experiences to those interested in the biosciences at all levels, while particularly serving those with limited opportunities and/or from groups traditionally underrepresented in the sciences.

Specifically, BSI's Objectives are:

  • To promote undergraduate student retention in the sciences and prepare them for science careers, BSI provides mentored research experiences, augmented with professional development opportunities that expand science knowledge and hone skills congruent to student educational stages.

  • To enhance students' experiences in science education and encourage innovative science instruction among CU science faculty and precollege teachers, BSI sponsors pioneering efforts that update and improve science courses, laboratory equipment, and learning facilities.

  • To expand the teaching and mentoring skills of graduate students, postdoctoral scientists, and university faculty, BSI provides trainings, opportunities, and resources to work in K-12 classrooms and research laboratories.

  • To advance scientific literacy and engagement among precollege students, BSI supports science teacher professional development by: updating their knowledge of current science, providing them with relevant activities and resources, and connecting them with the University's scientific community. BSI also provides experienced mentors for new teachers to develop their teaching and help sustain them professionally.

  • To nurture precollege students' interest in science and expose them to a broader range of scientific careers, BSI provides scientists who present applications of their research and serve as role models.
