OIE Awards For information on nominating people for Global Citizen awards see: http://www.colorado.edu/OIE/GlobalCitizenAwards.html Global Citizen Awards The Office of International Education (OIE) is pleased to honor CU's Global Citizens for their outstanding contributions to international understanding. 2011 Winners:
Nii Armah Sowah, originally from Ghana, is a Senior Instructor of African Dance/African Music in the Department of Theatre and Dance. He has worked on the CU-Boulder campus since 2000 and has served as teacher, artist, mentor, community leader and international cultural ambassador. His pedagogical philosophy – while based on western structures – is highly influenced by his African roots, which emphasize communalistic principles. He teaches students that they are part of a broader, more diverse community and he encourages their mutual cooperation, support, and sharing. After taking his classes, students have been inspired to join the Peace Corps, study abroad in Africa, or choose international/cross-cultural work. Extending his cross-cultural influence beyond the campus, Nii Armah has served as a guest lecturer in the Boulder community and globally. In addition, though the 1000 Voices Project, a community group under his direction, Nii Armah has taken members to Ghana so they can experience the culture and further promote mutual understanding among people. Nii Armah’s ability to create community and build a network of global ambassadors is truly outstanding. We honor him as the Campus Global Citizen of the Year 2011.
Kim Man Loh (“Gary” Loh), is a senior from Malaysia who plans to graduate this December with a B.S. in Chemistry. During the past 5 years, Gary has been an active member of the International Festival Committee (IFC), the talented group of students that organizes the annual International Festival, a campus event which attracts more than 3,500 attendees. Gary first began as a member of the IFC Program Committee and later became the Co-Chair of the entire IFC for a two-year period. Since then, as a Past-Chair, he has stepped forward to guide staff advisers and current IFC Co-Chairs, explaining the details that need to be addressed every step of the way. He is a modest and unassuming person who doesn’t seek the limelight, yet he has truly been the one person upon whom everyone relies. In addition to his work with the IFC, Gary regularly attends the Friday International Coffee Hour and always offers to help even though he isn’t part of the group. He has even supported the European Graduate Students at CU by managing their Google group and helping in other ways. Gary has done all these activities while balancing his academic work and employment on campus. Gary is an excellent example of a global citizen who has left a lasting mark on the CU-Boulder community through his remarkable dedication to international efforts.
Mindy Bridges is an undergraduate student pursuing a B.A. in both Anthropology and Ecology & Evolutionary Biology. She has participated in a wide variety of international programs and activities ranging from the Global Seminar: Reconciliation and Diversity: The South African Model in South Africa, where she studied human rights/conflict management, to the SIT semester program in rural Nicaragua (SIT Nicaragua: Revolution, Transformation, & Civil Society). Here at CU she has worked with the Center for the Study of Conflict, Collaboration and Creative Governance (3CG). Building on this experience, Mindy then traveled to the Canadian School of Peacebuilding, where she studied Restorative Justice with Howard Zehr. Through her international/domestic experiences, and dedication to understanding other cultures, Mindy has come to exemplify the core values necessary to be considered a true ‘Global Citizen’.
