| The Biological Sciences Initiative, CU’s
highly successful scientific research and hands-on learning
program for undergraduates, K-12 students and teachers, was
further bolstered by a $2.2 million grant from the Howard
Hughes Medical Institute in 2002. The funds will be used
to connect more undergraduates with CU faculty and broaden
access for women, underrepresented minorities and first-generation
CU students. |
Teaching Excellence Programs
- The President's Teaching Scholars program brings together
faculty from all four CU campuses who have been recognized
for their excellence in teaching and research. Each year the
university designates a maximum of six distinguished faculty
members as President's Teaching Scholars. As of September 2002,
the program included 60 faculty members.
- The Student Organization for Alumni Relations annually presents
four faculty with $1,500 Teacher Recognition Awards based on
nominations and review by students. The SOAR award is CU-Boulder's
only student-chosen, student-run teaching award.
- Up to 12 Boulder Faculty Assembly excellence awards of $3,000
each are given annually to faculty members in three categories:
Teaching, Service, and Research, Scholarly and Creative Work.
- The $20,000 Hazel Barnes Prize annually recognizes one excellent
Boulder campus teacher who also has made significant contributions
in a field of study. Law Professor Charles Wilkinson received
the award in 2002.
- The Faculty Teaching Excellence Program provides an array
of opportunities for CU-Boulder faculty to critically reflect
on teaching and learning environments in order to create satisfying
and engaging learning environments for students. Emphases on
how students learn, as well as how teachers teach, are incorporated
within all the program's offerings. Faculty participants read
and discuss the work of scholars whose material covers a range
of disciplines and who represent different theoretical perspectives
on learning and teaching.
