The Spindle Pole Body (SPB) in yeast, the functional equivalent of the centrosome in mammalian cells, is required for spindle formation and chromosome segregation in both mitosis and meiosis. In each cell cycle, along with DNA replication, the yeast cell must duplicate its SPB in order to form the bipolar spindle. How duplication of the SPB occurs is the primary focus of the Winey lab.
