Lyle Uyetake is a Professional Research
Assistant. He is currently working on understanding how radiation induces
apoptosis independently of p53 in Drosophila.
Our lab identified radiation-induced
p53-independent apoptosis in 2006 (Wichmann et al., PNAS). Unlike in mammals,
Drosophila genome encodes only one p53 family member. Therefore, mechanism(s)
that induce apoptosis independently of p53 in Drosophila are likely to be new
and interesting.
Currently, Lyle is performing a forward
genetics screen to identify genes needed for p53-independent apoptosis. He is
nearly done with Chromosome II and has 15 potential hits.
