This infant has a mutation in the myostatin gene which leads to the production of lower levels of active myostatin protein. Since myostatin negatively regulates muscle mass, this child has large muscles (even though the infant does not exercise!). Q1: Why don't we all have mutations in the myostatin gene? Q2: If there was a myostatin inhibitor, should parents be allowed to give it to their children (and why)? |
