Frequently Asked Questions Regarding the Kittredge Honors Program
How do I get into the Kittredge Honors Program?
Contracts will be sent to the first 125 students on our ranked list, with deadlines for responding. Any vacancies left by the failure of someone to return their contract in a timely way will be offered to the next person on the ranked list. This process continues until we have 125 contracts. When will I know if I have been accepted into KHP or not? If you receive a contract from KHP, you know you have a place reserved for you. Generally we have all our returned Contracts by mid-May, although sometimes we will have vacancies that appear over the summer that we will attempt to fill from our ranked list. If the Department of Housing assigns me to Buckingham Hall, am I in KHP? Not necessarily. KHP comprises about half of the Buckingham population. You are in KHP only if you have returned the signed Contract by the deadline indicated on the contract. How can I find out my place on the KHP ranked list? After March 17th, if you send us an email, we will do our best to give you a good indication of your place on the list and your prospects for getting into KHP. Email us at khp@colorado.edu. What if I sent in everything as required, and I still have not heard from anyone? Begin by confirming that your Admissions Confirmation fee has been received by the Admissions Office. Then, email KHP about your “Invitation to Apply to KHP” form. We will do our best to respond in a timely way. The Admissions Confirmation fee is crucial to the formation of our ranked list, so make sure this is sent to the correct place and received. Is there an extra fee for KHP? Yes. The fee for the year is $725, the same as all the other residential academic programs. This fee will appear on your Housing bill in the Fall. Please do not send money to KHP. This fee is non-refundable. Is there scholarship money available for KHP? No, unfortunately. We encourage you to pursue all the usual avenues for scholarships and financial aid, but the Honors program and KHP do not, at this time, have funds to disperse. Will my roommate be in KHP if I am in KHP? What about my neighbors in Buckingham Hall? Yes, your roommate will also be in KHP if you are. In a few rare cases, this does not happen. However, your neighbors may or may not be in KHP. We are dispersed throughout Buckingham Hall. Will I find Buckingham Hall to be more studious than other residence halls? Most of the time. However, as with all residence halls, the quality of life in the hall is a function of the residents at the time. Honors students tend to positively influence the academic focus for the whole hall. What is required of KHP participants? We ask that you commit to:
Yes. You are subject to the sanctions of the Department of Housing and the University if you violate rules. If you are required to leave Buckingham or the University because of an imposed sanction, you will also be leaving KHP and your fee will not be returned. Also, if, in the judgment of the KHP Director and the Director of Honors, you do not make a legitimate effort to participate in KHP or that your actions are deemed detrimental to the integrity of the program, you may be asked to leave KHP and Buckingham Hall. Your place in Buckingham Hall is provided on the assumption of your active interest and participation in KHP. Can I be kicked out of KHP for poor grades? No. Sometimes the first semester at the university is more challenging than expected. We will do our best to help you succeed, to find the help you need, and to be a successful student. We will commit to you for the entire academic year. Can I stay in KHP for my second year at CU-Boulder? Yes. Once in, you have the option to stay. Some choose to stay on as Flock Leaders, too. Look for the applications at the beginning of the Spring semester. All incoming KHP students are assigned to a small group of about 25 KHPers, called Flocks. You will be meeting regularly with your Flock throughout the year, so make some friends, decide to participate and take some ownership. Help to decide how to spend the Flock budget! All Flocks will have Flock Leaders who have been in KHP a previous year and successfully applied to be a Flock Leader. Am I guaranteed a KHP class if I have been provided a Contract to participate in KHP? Not necessarily. Everyone will provided a seat in a KHP class for the Fall semester, most likely either your first or second choice. Sometimes in the Spring Semester, a few students are unable to find a KHP class that suits their needs or that can fit into their schedule. Also, because of the way in which first year students are made to register for classes (basically last in line), sometimes a desired KHP will be closed. While we do what we can to provide a diversity of core KHP classes and enough seats to accommodate our whole KHP population, we also know that sometimes this will not be suitable for everyone. If you think you cannot take a KHP class in the Spring for whatever reason, you must see the Director. Where will my KHP class be held? We have exclusive use of a “smart classroom” in Buckingham Hall, rm 236. Will I have wireless access to the web? Yes. KHP has wireless capability. How long has KHP been in existence? Continuously, since the 1990-1991 academic year. It just gets better each year, too. What is the relationship of KHP to the general Honors Program at CU? KHP is a subset of the Honors Program, focused on the first year experience for those who choose this option. All KHP students are in the Honors Program and may take general honors courses beginning in the Spring semester of their first year. You must maintain a cumulative gpa of 3.3 to continue to have access to honors courses and to enter the thesis process.
